Could anybody recommend smaller fish that can be kept without a heater? I have a spare 40l (or thereabouts) tank knocking around and it would be kept in a room that is always around 20-24 degrees. The room houses two other aquariums that run heaters so the ambient temperature is fairly warm. It is also my home office so day-time temperatures are comfortable even during Pretoria winters.

Since it is not a terribly large tank, I am looking into nano fish and have read that Endlers are quite happy with just about any temperature. Does anybody have first-hand experience with them? I am also open to any suggestions.

    Hi,

Have a look at galaxy rasbora, emerald rasbora, white cloud mountain minnows. Those three off the top of my head

Thanks, @PappaBear . I have kept Zebra Danios before but their aggressive nature is, I must admit, not to my taste. I watched them bully each other to death until only the largest bully remained. Are Mollies perhaps a little more collegial?

Thanks, @TheGrissom . I have looked into the minnows; they seem to be really fuss-free.

I will do more research but some breeders report that they can even overwinter outdoors in northern US climes where the ponds freeze over.

White clouds are perfect for non-heated and outside ponds

Yep I keep white clouds in unheated pond outside, apparently they can handle down to 5C . This will be their 2nd winter, they breed in the pond. I also have white clouds (offspring from the pond stock) in the 1,5m.

They’re jumpers though, especially when spawning and especially in a small tank. So would suggest a lid or drop the water level a bit.

Friend of mine keeps White Clouds in an unheated pond here in the UK. But they don't seem to last long
It's a big natural type pond, and he has Dragonflies frequently visiting. I think the nymphs probably eat the fish

@Reedfish , that's horrible! Perfectly natural but also perfectly horrible. Not of your friend, of course. The mental image of a nymph eating a fish is rather grotesque though

    Doesn't bother me

Am tempted to get a few for my mini pond.
