Sadly over the past few weeks I have had some major moves at home and during these moves my last 2 fish died a rather nice and large Clown Loach and a Blood parrot.

I dont know what caused the death but I assume stress might have been a big factor but I didn't investigate any further I was just upset that I lost 2 fish that I have owed for almost 5 years

but this now leaves me with a blank canvas tank it is a 1200mmx450mmx700mm with rear filtration, I will allow the tank to circulate for a few weeks before I get any fish but looking for some advice and direction. I was thinking nano fish but was wondering if the tank size might be a little BIG for small fish or will mass fish look good in a big tank

also will need some direction on quantity of fish in the tank depending on size and usual waste production.

I do have a heater but would also like to perhaps reduce the water temps a little for power savings on the tanks (I dont mind running heater but where possible power saving would be great)

I will add a photo of the tank this evening now that the clay has settled

You could add some rock and wood scape with a large shoal of white cloud mountain minnows. Beautiful little fish and the don't require you to run your heater except maybe in the depths of winter

Be careful with the kind of of filter you have. If it's a built in filters you need find a way of reducing the size of the inlet or else you will lose your nano fish in there. Trying to catch them with a net while standing on a ladder isn't fun. Then, a few hours later, there's a bunch in there again.

Regarding your question regarding the look, a large school of small fish looks amazing in a big tank.

They might actually be what I am looking for thank for the advice now to make sure the filter is not going to swollow them up whole.

can I also include things like shrimp to the tank or should I keep it Minnow specific

have a look at vietnamese cardinals - tanichthys micagemme. Needs water to be at about 20 degrees but hands down the best schooling fish that I have ever owned. As a bonus it is pretty easily bred as well

MMM now to drain the tank again I think I want to go with these smaller fish like the WCMM or the Vietnamese Cardinals.

will check the gaps on the filter back what is too wide?

If you can close the inlet completely it can work, but you're probably going to have to clean it regularly, because it's quite fine.

VMM are Vietnamese Cardinals with both work really well with shrimp :)

I personally prefer the Cardinals, the mountain minnows are just easier to source.

Good luck and keep us updated !
