Do you have unwanted fish that you would like to get rid of? No space for your fish? Moving abroad and cant take your fish with you?

I will gladly accept any unwanted freshwater fish in the Durban area. I quarantine them for a week and find new homes for them as soon as they are proven healthy. If not, necessary steps will be taken to treat the fish and house it until it recovers.

I accept any fish from Cichlids to Goldfish to Guppies.

    Regards

    TM

That's a brave thing you're doing, TM. I'm not saying that I don't appreciate what you're prepared to do, but do bear in mind the following things:

    1) People often want money for their big fish
    2) Unwanted fish are normally the fish that cause problems - aggressiveness, diet etc.
    3) Not all fish are compatible. You'll need plenty of space - and I'm not just talking the number of tanks, but the volume as well. You won't be able to house all the unwanted 30cm Oscars of Durban in one tank, and they'll need a minimum of about 150 litres each by themselves. Not to mention the bigger fish, like Pangasius...

PM me with your contact details, and I'll help you as much as I can, but like I said, be prepared for a rough road ahead.

    Regards

Sorry if I came off negative there, but it is a difficult task that you're undertaking. We do need people who are willing to do this, with the facilities, time and will to do it properly.

Like I said, I'm willing to give you a hand. I've got equipment and other odds and ends that may be of help if you need.

    Cheers

I was honestly hopeing that people do this fish rescue thing. I am glad you decided to. It is a plus you being in Durban, as people release fish that get too big and aggresive for their tanks. I would suggest you do a bit more advertising on the free sites as most members here are knowledgeable about fish and don't get themselves in a position where they have fish that they cannot accomidate. And the advice here is great.

Welcome to TASA and all the best with your rescue, remember junkmail and gumtree

Sorry about my previous post. My internet is a bit crazy and I didn't get to complete my post.

    I was saying....

Glad to see that you are concerned about the fish and their well being when they are under my care. I am not the only member of the fish rescue team. I have 2 friends who each have 2 200L utility containers equipped with resun cs-700 filters. I usually care for smaller fish as I have 1 100L utility container. These fish usually are mollies and goldfish with the odd pleco.

People who sell their fish are probably doing the right thing. Better to sell the fish than to have it swim down the toilet.

I intend to provide this service so flushing is reduced.

We usually get 4-6 fish in a weekend and remove and re-home the fish from the previous week.

We have no problems with space.

I just picked up a jebo r338 from a lady in pinetown on sunday who could not take care of her fish anymore. She had a 20cm Khuli Loach, 2 banjo catfish, and 3 congo gold tetras.

I have already found homes for all of them.

    Regards

    TM

Always look a gift fish in the mouth..LOL

:smile1:Admirable job you have taken on.

Some advice, as I've been down this road before..

Remember, fish from different original owners, should not be mixed, until at least 2wks of observation has occurred while they are kept separately.
THEN consider moving into shared water/holding tanks. Then another minimum 1-2weeks of observation and/or prophylaxis.
Cross contamination is not immdiately visible, and parasites, pathogens affect different groups of fish in different ways.

eg. Consider goldfish, plecostomus, and mollies, swords, platies, guppies, danios, etc..in Natal, are likely tough survivors... so may act as a resistant reservoir of 'nasties' waiting to pounce on any unsuspecting NEW owner's OLD fish....
....or worse between each other, BEFORE they go to be rehomed.
The above example can be broadened to include most other fish too.

Even SPCA, routinely deworms, inspects, innoculates, treats preventatively etc as part of "cleaning up' cats/dogs before they get rehomed..
Work along those paths for a guide to balance time , effort and resources spent, and eventual happy homes for abandoned fishes

In Johannesburg, and Port Elizabeth, and recently Cape Town I did this for a few years. Until I needed to be rescued:p
Our maidservant's quarters, study, Garage, Neighbours garage, and cousin up the road all had hospital/shelter tanks for many types of fish.

Let me not get into my brief(7year long!) Discus rescue attempt..what a heartache!!!

PS I have yet to see a 20cm Kuhli loach!

    Hey!

    Thanks for the reply!

I really do hope that I don't get to the stage where I have to have over 100 fish at any given time.

The loach was a leopard kuhli. These grow the biggest of all the loaches. (did some research)

I have found homes for some of my fish as well because I thought I would need the space for future rescued fish.

Just yesterday my goldfish eggs hatched and now my 10gal is occupied for the next three months.

It is a hard job to undertake but I love fish!

    Regards

So you sell the rescued fish?
its not so easy i tried this and ended up with 145 fish in less than 3 months. the fish dont always get homes fast enough.
I sorted out my mess and will only take something now that i know wil move quick again.

I find homes for fish I can't keep. I sell only rare species such as some African Cichlids and other fish. The money is used to upgrade and increase tank space for future fish that need homes.

I don't ship. Most people ask for species specific fish before they see me. If I don't have the fish they want then I advise them on where to get it( If I know).

I currently have no fish up for adoption or for sale.

Shipping costs are strictly the adopters responsibility.

    Regards

I've seen large silver dollars in Phoenix. This guy owns a pet shop there and sells it. They are about 4inch?
