Well it started out with my water parameters, quite in the range for tanganikyans.

I live and farm in namibia near etosha pan.

The work started on the pond started 2 years ago when i decided it is time to supply the people with good quality fish that no one seems to get hold off in the african countries.

My plan was and still is to breed the tanganykans outside and angels, and the like that needs some little attention inside in my dream setup of 50 1-5/1.2m tanks depending on witch side work better in my garage what we call(stoor) that i take a piece of it.

    Back to the dam.

The dam started out small and very back braking.

To work in rocks is not a dream building job and no other better sites as the whole farm is covered in lime stones and thick bush.

We started bringing in loads of thick stumps of tamboti bush to burn and crack the rocks to shape the dam.

This process was at the beginning very slowly and frustrating.
Burning throwing cold water on the rocks to crack it.

Eventually we was on our way to a nice depth.

There it begin its shape , digging here and there braking as we go.

Decisions -decisions my plan originally was to put in on one side a glass and frame to see the fish as i go down stairs in the ground but design problems left out that idea.

Next decision was after finishing the underside of the dam that now has a nice rock bridge and two nice rock surfaces in the inside was the filter.

As my water got allot of phospates and is in general nice hard i decided afetr looking at some om my info i have on pond filters to design a filter around water lillies as the main filter.

At the moment I am stuck on making a seperate water filter with water lilies inside the channels or make a two side filter one the tradional koi pond filter design and the other that work together with the filter with waterlilies combined cleaning the water.

As the dam nears completion there is a few things to do, teh waterfall of 4 meters high and a half to a meter wide that's going to have a small sand filter to the cement and channels filter design.

Everything is going nicely to be put in the waterfall so the waterfall is also a pump house.
Lastly i have to mention i think of to keep the pond warmer if it arise it is going to be to cold , the plan is to use a donkey to keep warm the dam and covers of plastic cattle food with styrofoam inside.

Any ideas, plans are welcome the longer i work the bigger it gets and then when do i get fineshed.

i think most on here have somewhat an understanding of afrikaans, if they are not afrikaans themselves. though its not necessary to do two threads on the same topic just for the language?

Wow Angelfish, love the scale and ambition of your project!!!
Can tell you that keeping Tanganyikans in ponds works a charm...Seen huge outside breeding ponds in Taiwan where the guys breed frontosa and T.moorii - the size, health and colour of these guys is something to see...We often forget how good natural sunlight is for fish...
Good luck with the build and drooling in anticipation of some pics...
