    Hi Guys

Not strictly an aquarium fish but I know we have some very knowledgeable persons on this forum.

Can anyone ID the fish in the pics?

Caught in a trout dam near Nottingham Road, KZN on a small woolly bugger.

    ???

I concur with Salmon Africa.... Definately a 'Bluegill' sunfish.

Just getting slightly OT here, but I find it interesting that you guys here call that a Bream? Back in the UK a Bream would be Abramis brama, which I believe is Blacklisted here in SA. I've noticed there are a few fish here that have totally different common names to there, or the same name is used here for a totally different species.

    Cheers
    G!

Definitly a blue gill. Good live bait for large mouth bass.

And that is EXACTLY why the BLACKLIST falls under SCIENTIFIC NAME and NOT common names. Member repeatedly request the common name for the BL, not realising this small problem. (However we have tried to accomodate by providing common names where we can.)

Thanks for ID guys... after reading up on the problems Bluegills have caused in Japan it is worrying to see them in our country.

It seems as if one day the only fish left in our dams and rivers will be the alien invasive ones (I include trout and large mouth bass as part of the alien group).

and correctly so - they are alien. Trout and bass have all but killed off the indigenous fish of the Western Cape. I am trying to get my hands on a map a good friend of mine did outlining the current distribution of fish in South Africa.

You must see how some people react when I tell them their beloved trout are alien.... many a 'debate' has started over this.
