    Hi all

I need some advice on a idea i have regarding starting up a hatchery on a small scale and with time expand it to a full grown bussiness. the hatchery will be inside a building in an industrial area in our town. Small place with a rent of +-R2000.I have two options. My first option is to have 1000L containers and breed livebeariers. second option is to buy small koi and grow it and then sell it. I thought about food fish but realize it needs a big setup and with trout there is new legislation that i am not aware of.

can someone please give me advice

    Nick

    Hmmnn... How'd i miss this thread? @Nick

    O.K...coupla Questions first...
What level of fishkeeper are you? Do you have access to buy directly from wholesalers in the industry? Otherwise this becomes expensive in the setup phase... Do you know koi, like REALY know them and how their developement from Tosai(yearold) to Nisai or Sansai(2 - 3 yr olds) best if you could grow them on in mud dams like i do...much better growth rates...do you have a market for your product... most koi places(if they know their stuff) wont buy from a private individual due to the risk of disease - and if they belong to SAKTA(SA koi traders association - of witch I was a founding member) They are not alowed to buy your fish..

As a kid I ran a very sucsessful fish breeding room - here's some tips:
-Spaceheat if you can - keeps the elec bills down...
    -Big,recirculating systems make sense
    -Quarentine,quarentine,quarentine!!!!
-Breed a mix of species,if one thing fails, you got another to fall back on
    -Apisto's - rainbowfish - Barbs like ticto,odessa - Angels are always good - livebearers

    Hi azurekoi

No i dont know how you mis the tread. saw that it didnt appear on the home page. anyway thanks for the advice. a breeder (Nick James) also told me that my space would be too small for koi and lfoodfish and that there is always a market for good quality livebeariers.

I am a breeder(hobby) with +- 15years experience on breeding, livebeariers, kribensis, danios, brichardi, blue acara, white clouds.

any advice is welcome as i want to plan everything before i start

    Thanks

    Nick
