I have been using spice grinders for a few months now -- a used pepper grinder works good for larger chunks (heap on the right (10 turns +-1.4 grams )) and a new spice grinder is good for a finer grind (heap on the left (10 turns < .6 grams)).

I found since doing this the tank needs less maintenance and I have no overfeeding issues. The heap in the middle is the typical pellet size out the box. I feed twice a day.

    Very nice idea!
Another Q, When I feed flakes, I usually grind the flakes between my fingers to make them bite sized for the danios, is this the right way of doing it, or should i just chock the flakes in whole?

Crushing the flakes is what we do for the fish with the 'smaller mouths'. :) Or we use the Profs granules which come in various granule sizes.

    Very cool idea.

We should have a new thread for innovative ways to do all things fish related.

Glad you like it - if you use a used spice grinder make sure it has been washed - not sure what spices will do to fish.

For some tanks I use a cheap plastic funnel - small hole in the hood - funnel in the hole and then grind above the funnel. No need to lift the hood - really helps when I am in a rush in the morning.

Just think how many of us dumped small grinders like this and could have used it.:mad:

    Hi all
sorry to hijack this threat but what is in your experience actually the better food, pellet or flake. I use at the mo a mix of flakes tetra pro colour and the cheapy from the supermarket. Every second day or so some self-made frozen food.
Nothing wrong with i guess but still would like to improove

best is a mixture of flake, granule, live. remember in nature, food isn't a daily steady supply for most fish

Today its a few micro bugs, tomorrow some unlucky mozzy larvae, then some algae, then a smaller fish or fry etc.
if you only use dried foods, mix granule and flake at least

Stick with what works for you - I find the more food source you introduce the more difficult it is to maintain water quality / track fish health issues ... spot fish that are not eating. At the moment I am leaning towards granules - better portion control less wast. Anything that comes from an unqualified source I boil to death - but that is just me.

Then again it depends what fish you have - predator tank probably means less control of food origin.

Over the years I have tried many a spice grinder ... from the nasty really cheap refill grinders to the more exotic ceramic adjustable, even contemplated a battery one at one point in time.

In this case ... the original spice grinder from the kitchen still does the trick the best for me. Yes I do mix granules with flakes and it works fine.

stunning tip. Just tried it, and reducing the size of the pellets was great. Now I see less Neons with a pellet swimming around with a red pellet in the mouth sucking it till it dissolves

Need to get some more flakes - mostly different pellets in the mix.

I have one of those two sided grinders for salt and pepper. One side has pellets and the other algae flakes to vary diet.

The one I'm using also has an adjustment on the grinder so you can set it to the desired size.I found that on the smaller bottles the flakes and pellets just fall trough the gap.

It works very well and a good investment. Feeding is a breeze.
