As most of you who have visited my profile know that I privately do fish adoptionsfor fish that are getting to big for the peoples tanks

The reason I am doing this is to prevent them from ending up in our river system and dams and saving them from the stress and suffering of being in a to small tank.

So a couple of days ago A guy called me to collect fish from him due to the power failures in his area
    his monster fish are dying.

If you are interested they will come out of quarantine in two weeks time

    Here are some picks

    The clown knife is 600mm

    There were 6 pleco's from 400mm to 600mm

What do you do with them once you "adopt" them? Do you find larger homes for them.
Someone should start a large tropical pond, and take these fish off peoples' hands and let them grow in the pond. It could have a little step with glass thing that people could view the fish with.

@Firefly, I think that's a good idea but it would probably be a lot of maintenance.

But what if you could create a self sustaining sort of thing. You could plant a section HEAVILY and have feeder fish in that section. Let them multiply and then allow bigger fish to feed, sort of creating a natural environment.

    We're busy hijacking here....

It would have to be very big and natural. With natural rock formations, wood, everything to provide hiding places for smaller fish etc.

No it's not hijacking it's ideas, I am planing a 4500 to 6000L plywood tank for the pangasius which I can use for adoption

purposes as well just the glass for it is going to be a problem but I'l see what I can organize

@Firefly yes I try and find place for them this is only the begining and I have placed out some fish to people I know that can take care of them.

    Oh OK then :)

Something like the big pond would be very nice to grow big fish, but I can also imagine schools of tetras, Angles, Discus, lots of apisto pairs...

@Willem, what would the cost me to build a tank that size?

Well done for doing this Willem. My opinion is that they should put these fish on a special list.

If you want to keep one you would need a permit and your tank should be inspected.

These fish were never made for captivity.

Best of luck to you Willem I hope things work out.

Myabe you can get a few monster tanks once @Corne get those other tanks sorted.

    Ditto!
Look like I'm doing the same down here in Cape Town!
This is totally involuntary and started with fish that friends/members don't want anymore.
My wife actually started to call my fish room: "Tropical Fish Depot" as a lot of fish have been deposited here!
Even some of her work friends have donated some unwanted tanks and equipment.
I have helped a lot of new fish-keepers, to setup, with these tanks/equipment and fish.
I also try to find homes for these fish, with members/friends, that I know to keep the same fish or need another fish to form a pair.
I also have a very nice fully grown, female golden oscar, that need a new mate...

@Willem - I commend you on your efforts, to find homes for these beauties!
    Good luck!

Thank you @Gert Combrink as I said I am only starting now and basically only going public now as well. I use to also help
with stray dogs and cats where I stayed in Hammanskraal and after I moved to Pretoria couldn't go on with it (moved into a place four times smaller) Then my brother gave up his breeding project and gave me all his stuff and from there I started

As for the oscar I would love to send you one of them if I had the means to get it to you. Wait I'l talk to some one maybe
    we can organize some thing.

O ja!!!! Went to builder to get price on the wood for 3456L tank , cost for wood only +- R2200.00

@Willem, you have it wrong. I need a home for a large female golden oscar. She bred previously, but hubby died.
    I don't want another...

LOL...!!! Came home this afternoon and checked up on the adopted fish and to my surprise the oscars had layed some eggs
now to wait and see if they are fertile.
