Sorry never had a canister -- no experience with any of them. My magic filtration media for other filter is floss - or more correctly I use quilt batting from a fabric shop ... it is cheap and I never bother cleaning it, remove and dispose. I also like open-cell sponges. Both of these could probably be used in a canister?

I have the 1200l dolphin... I asked the same question a while back.. No real negative responses other than people saying that mainstream filters like fluval were the way to go... I have no issues with mine so far other than the fact that it seems like the liter rating is not what is claimed on the packaging as this is a 750l per hour after you account for the fact that it has to pump the water about 1m up to the surface of the tank

How do you guys measure the flowrate I have the c-1300 that claims 1000 l/p/h
Also how does it filter top to bottom or bottom to top (just want to make sure I arranged it correctly)
Thx for the replies (Oh and it is very quiet as well)

    Hi Mars

I also have the C1300 and to me it does a great job. I am also unsure whether it goes top to bottom or vice versa.

    Regards
    Peter

I set mine up top to bottom...apparently operating rate is 750l/h at >1m

The box of the filter will usually give you a matrix graph that represents the flow rate at x height.

from bottom to top, so you would want your sponges etc first (if you use sponges) then your bio balls/ceramic rings and lastly your carbon/purgen etc (if you want to use it) on top.

the reason why singularity would arange it like this is so that small particles can be filtered out b4 it reaches the bio balls / ceramic rings so that it doesnt clog them up.. this is better for the bennificial bacteria :)

also a simple way is to test flow rate is to take a 10l bucket, take out the output nosel, place it in the bucket and see how long that takes to fill the bucket.. eg. if it takes 60s,=> 10L/60s = 100L/hour

correct me if im wrong but I was of the impression that the 1300 flow started from the top ? so the the finer filter material would be at the top (per instructions of shop)... if it is the other way around then i need to flip my setup...

Water is syphoned out of the tank into the filter, that then goes to the bottom of the filter and rises up toward the powerhead of the filter where it is then pushed back into the tank.

This is not a hard and fast rule with canisters Singularity. You would need to check the instructions that came with the canister to see which way the water flows. Both my canisters work from top down. Water syphoned into the canister via gravity, pours over the first basket at the top, and then to the bottom. The baskets form a pipe when locked together, and the pump is situated in the centre of these pipes and suck the filtered water from the bottom up to the tank through the pipes of the baskets.

Rather check what the box/instructions recommend you to do, or take pictures of the insides of the canister and let us advise you that way.

Sounds like a few people might be running their filters in reverse. :p

One of mine works the same as zoom described.

I don't know how people can get this right? 99.9% of fish equipment comes with instruction manuals. Other canisters come with the filter media already in the right place.

When there is no instructions or filter media supplied (like mine wasn't), then common sense and spending just 3 minutes looking and interpretting the canister prevails.

Zoom, i know it looks like it could suck from the bottom, but it does not, i have never seen a canister work in any other way, next time you clean the filter let the tap run into the inlet tap of the canister and see where it pops out. All cannisters have the one tube that is formed by the interlocking baskets (input) and water then rises through the filter media where it is then pumped back. You would need a powefull pump to make it work in the way you describe.
