Your sponge filters work off airpumps. You can get an airpump that runs for about 4-6 hours off batteries.

Most stores stock battery pumps of different sizes and brands. They should also stock some sponge filters as well.

Just ask for a sponge filter. THey are the most common of the filters. They get used a lot for the very small tanks. ANd a battery operated airpump is also very common.

The problem you'll run into is that there's no such thing as a relay-activated battery air pump. You have to switch them on manually :(

You get a fancier type of air pump that has battery backup should the power fail, they are expensive though +/-R800....

I bought a standard cheapo battery pump for R45 at Animal Kingdom Atterbury, and now I'm on the hunt for a 220v relay that I can use to switch it on automatically when the power goes out.
