Filter socks

A week ago I started using a filter sock on my sump. After 2 days I noticed that my tank water was much clearer than normal. The sock was completely saturated after 3 days and needed cleaning. In my opinion, after only a short time of using it, you can change the complete set up of your sump.

When using a filter sock you don't need the normal 3 section sump, but change this to 2, as the sock replaces the normal mechanical part of filter wool, and increase the biological part.

I would like to know who uses a filter sock, or is this only the marine guys using it?

I started using a filter sock about a year ago and I could not agree more about how easy it is and how efficient it is and how good the results are. I do rinse my sock out every day, but once or twice I have left it for like 4 or 5 days and the result is just as good. I just tie a swimming pool filter sock onto a 45 deg PVC elbow - with a rubber band, and slip the elbow onto the down-pipe and it works perfectly.
I do also still have filter wool in my first chamber and but rinse that out maybe once a month. The filter wool I do think traps the very finest particles that maybe get thro the filter sock. Perfect clear water is the result of all of this!!
