    Hi All

i would just like to run my thought past you guys to see what you think of my potential filter set-up.

I have a 250L community tank with a Internal Biological filter (water come in on the right side, runs down the filter media and being pumped out on the other side)

So currently I have 4 layers in my filter:
    • Top Layer: Filter Wool
    • Second Layer: Carbon
    • third Layer: Filter matting in zig-zag form
    • bottom Layer: Biological Filter Balls
What I would like to do is the following:
    • Top Layer: Filter Wool
    • Second Layer: Seachem Matrix Carbon
    • Third Layer: Filter Matting in zig zag form
    • Fourth Layer: Seachem Purigen
    • Bottom Layer: Existing Bio Balls and add 1L os Seachem Matrix
What do you guys think? Any ideas or possible problems I might pick up?

    Thanks

    Morning....

Firstly you have a good selection of media. Its just a matter getting the order correct. Always mechanical first (filter sponge, wool and so on)followed by biological ( your matrix bioballs) and then chemical. (Purigen carbon and so on._

The reason for mechanical first is to keep most of the larger particals removed from the water before it gets to your bio media. So it does not clog it and you don't have fish waste rotting in the rest of the media. But you can run additional layers of mechanical filtration in between each stage if you want the extra bit of help. Also (and someone correct me if I'm wrong here) I don't think you should run bio balls fully submerged. They are very invective if they don't have water flowing over them. Like in a trickle filter setup.

Also if someone else can jump in here? I don't think you need to run carbon and purigen it the reason you are using it is to polish the water???
