    Hi everyone

I recently picked up a free 370 litre tank that needed a brace replaced and 2 lids. I've got a quote for these pieces and should hopefully get the glass this week/early next week.

For now it is going to be a holding tank for a +- 30cm comet/fantail goldfish hybrid from my folks while they repair their pond, which may take a few months. Once that is done, i'm hoping to make a large low-tech planted community aquarium with +- 50 fish consisting of cories, lambchop rasboras and some shrimp.

I've found differing recommendations on the flow rate recommended, as well as how accurate manufacturer specs are. Most people agree that you should bargain on getting 50-60% of the manufacturer specified flow rate due to media slowing the canister down, but i'm not 100% certain on tank turnover rate. Some people say at least 2 times tank volume per hour, others gun for almost 6.

My thoughts were to go with 2 of the Dophin C1000 canister filters. The manufacturer quotes 1650 litres/hour, so 2 of these at 60% would give me 1980 litres/hour, which is about a 5.3 times per hour turnover for the tank. 2 of these together would be just over half the price of 1 Fluval FX6, with some redundancy in case 1 dies.

Going for 2 filters also buffers some of the initial cost, as i can buy 1 filter and let it run with the comet hybrid and get the other once the folks pond is ready and i can start my community.

Please let me know if there is anything i've forgotten, or some other alternative to the 2 Dophin C1000 canisters idea.

    Cheers,
    Kean

6 -7 times an hour is great for water turnover. 2 filters is always safer than just one....

FYI those flow rates don't take into consideration media or pipe length/gravity.

Alternatively, seeing as fish load is going to be relatively low and plant load is going to be quite high, would it be possible to use 1 canister filter and a wavemaker for extra circulation?
