I known this is a a stupid question but would it be better for my fish and tank. if I where 2 run internal filter one came with the tank with sponge pad and the 2nd one I look at has a carbon cartridge.

You can run two filters, don't see why not.
Most of use don't use carbon except to remove medication and such, it can remove useful minerals sometimes

So maybe I should look at another one with the pad I thought the one with carbon was the better ones for better filtration.

i used to run these type of filters that has the ceramic rings, no carbon as i used to add fertilizer for some plants which the carbon usually removes.

Keep in mind tgat carbon will be effecfived for 2 to 3 weeks and then it needs to be replaced to be effective. Carbon also clears your water and removes bad odors, which shouldnt really happen in anycase.

@Lee.... before any advice on what else to buy.. lets start with the first question..

What tank/size tank have you got and a picture of the tank and filter it came with as well as what and how many fish you have in the tank, will give us a much better idea of what to recommend

As has been said, charcoal is not a necessity and despite the fact that back in the day I think everyone used charcoal in their filters, subsequent studiesnow recommend against it unless you using it to remove meds or another specific reason
It does clear the water and remove odors but if your filter is working properly and is adequate for your tank and stock you should not need to use the charcoal
Rather use the space to use more media where good bacteria can grow

This forum is amazing with all the interesting things you learn. I also used to have charcoal in my filters including the canister filter.

I don't use those anymore as o upgraded and built a sump but they dis work, I used to use the tetra fertiliser, can't remember the name though. I know have proper substrate so I don't have to used as much anymore but I'm also not heavily planted and all that clued up on fertilisers and plants.
