Hi,my female guppies is taking sooooo long to get pregnant, what can be the cause of this? There is about 1 male to 3 females. But only once in a while a female gives birth to less than 10 fry? Some did give birth but its been like 2 months and some didnt have a sigh of being pregnant..

Hey Marius. Sometimes it just takes time. Also, sometimes it has to do with their diet, and how they are being conditioned. Try feeding them loads of nutritious foods like frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, good quality flake foods, etc... Try and vary their diet as much as possible. They don't like to eat the same thing meal after meal, as much as you don't.

Also, try separate the males from the females, and condition them separately for a week or 2. Then reintroduce the males to the females tank.

    Good luck!

I could make a few comments, but it wouldn't be suitable for the Forum :boxing:

Agree with Sean J. Have you tried conditioning them with Bloodworm or Brine Shrimp?

Whats your water parameters like mate? - Guppies Dont like very soft water.... remember from when I was a student at Saasveld in George(just over the Mountain from you...lol) that the water(o.k it did come from mountain streams running through Fynbos...) was extremely soft/low pH... Guppies dont like that - females would have a very tough time producing young under such conditions...

Diet plays an important part, but look at their environment as well - you dont mention how big the tank is or how well stocked it is - Guppies will stop breeding under overpopulated conditions - also check the Nitrates - high = downward fry drops...
Any other fish that might be munching the babies before you notice them?
Lastly,Does the tank have a lot of floating plants or somesuch to make a gravid female feel secure enough to drop her fry?

    O. K - last,last.... Do you have a good genetically viable population of Guppies? aka - Did they come from a mate who has had the same bunch for years and years? then introduce a bit of "new Blood" (after quarentining them for 3 weeks or so 1st)

    Hope this helped....

Okey, its a 115 L tank, about 40 guppies,4 bostias striatas.PH is abou 7.8,I switch the food sumtimes. They are almost all diffrent blood, all new basicly.. But they used to give every month bitrhthen i started adding the older fry back into the main tank,so it might be overpopulated, but is 40 really so much??
I just dont want to stress them by removing them.. Oh and the water parameters is good, regular water changes every saterday when i clean my gravvel.. There is lots of flouting plants

Im not to sure if this will make sense... I made my water changes smaller, from 20-30perc weekly to 10perc for the last 2 months,i also dont use dechlorinator with waterchanges,i have a 100L drum,i use that water(cloor evaporates after about 24 hours) and ever since i gained more fry,and now, they all went to the pond, omw the fry expoded, they are everywhere-- reply if anything makes sense??
