    Hey

My female guppy is fat. She's been like this for the past two or three months, so I don't think she's pregnant. Pictures below.

I've assumed that it is bad digestion, so I've fed her weekly doses of green peas, followed by a day of fasting, but she's just getting fatter.

There've suggestions that it's worms, but I can't see any sign of worms, and all the other fish in the tank are fine.

    Any other ideas?

    Hi their.
A few things. Firstly, is the fish still swimming and eating as normal? Secondly, check if she has a few black spots towards the end of her as it may indicate that she could be pregnant. If she is not swimming and eating as normal then she may have a parasite and you should remove her to a quarantine tank for safety.
What are the other tank mates.
    Keep us posted.

I'm not sure what it is but I've lost a few guppy females like this. I also thought they were pregnant but they weren't. Hope she makes it.

@dash - She's swimming and eating normally, but I've already moved her to a secondaty tank.
She might even be eating more than normal.
No black spots, except for the two right beneath her mouth. You can see them clearly in the frontal photo. It looks like the gestation period for guppies are about a month, and she's been like this for more than a month, shouldn't that rule out pregnancy?
At the moment just juvenile Platys. Before that Platys, juvenile Platys, Corys and a Pleco.

@Hawk - How long did they last?

Not really sure dude. They get big (not quite as big as yours) then tend to hover around the surface and then :saint:

I can't tell you whats wrong with her because I don't know. But that is most definately NOT a normal gravid female gup - she's distended far too far.

    Does she excrete?

    @KennyG - She's very symmetrical, which rules out a tumor (I think).

@tracyp -Ooccasionally. At the moment the best theory is that she's blocked up, which is why I'm feeding her peas.

@Ryno - no salt yet. Does that treat bloat? What kind of dosage should I be looking at?

Hi. Don't add to much sault as you have just moved her to a new tank. It may just stress her out. Rather watch her and let us know how she is doing in the morning.

I have a few like that recently(5-10 deaths in 2 weeks). I did feed a metro + kanaplex and focus mix
all are seachem products and a bit of garlic juice. Not much more deaths to this
and the meds were all for internal parasites, ill repeat my meds tomorrow again.

I added salt to the water three weeks ago. No change yet. Fat as ever. Except for being fat, she looks fine. Any new / other suggestions?

Hi I am know expert on this however, it sounds like a case of Fish TB. Guys if it is then this is some thing very serious. I could be very wrong here and I hope I am but, one of the tell tail signs is some kind of skeletal problems and this could be why she is getting so fat.

"The main symptoms of fish tuberculosis are loss of scales, loss of color, lesions on the body, wasting, and skeletal deformities such as curved spines." - from Aquatic Community.

    http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/disease/tbc.php

This is more likely a case of bloat that has gone too far...

Guys, anyone tried a dose of epsom salts? Seriously, I once had problems with my guppies bloating up like that and dying. Noticed they weren't pooping as much. Some were dragging long threads of poop behind them. I Googled and someone somewhere (can't remember who) mentioned that they may be seriously constipated, and that adding some epsom salts to the water could help. I moved a couple of the worst cases to a 20l tank, and added a tablespoon of epsom salts. A couple of days later, most of them had pooped about twice their body weight, and were back to normal size. Two of them died, but I'm not sure if it was from the epsom salts, or if they were already too far gone. I then added a once off smaller dose (2 tablespoons to 100l tank) and it seemed to help.

I think it was those cheapie fish flakes that clogged up the works, so I started mixing a little digestive barn in with them. I also make sure to give them some of my 'patent' vegetable fish treats every couple of days. I'm not sure if it's the bran of the vegetable treats that's doing the job, but their pipes seem to be working okay.

I have absolutely no idea if what I've just said is at all relevant to the problem being discussed here, but I thought I might as well chuck it in anyway. Use at your own risk, and please don't put a 'hit' out on me if any of your fish die. - blind leading the blind an' all that, okay?

    :hides: :ahhhhh: :damnmate:
