    Hi All,

    I hope you don't mind me posting more photos of my oddballs.

    I have 2 of these Twig Cats. I have never seen them eat. They never take dry food, frozen food or any cucumber I put in for the Plecs.
    They do seem to hang on to the glass a lot, so they must eat algae. Had them for almost a year, so they must be doing ok on that.

    They look quite alright to me, and seem to have quite some size on them too :)

    But seriously, mate, you're just showing off now :p Joking, you keep my kind of fish :)

    Thanks
    As I said in another thread. If people are interested to see what fish I keep, I can continue posting photos.
    But if you guys think I am bragging, I can stop. I don't want to offend anyone.

    No ways! Please keep posting! Like many others have said, we don't often get to see fish such as these, so do us a favour and keep on posting! :)

    Interesting... I have one female Farlowella and she eats algae like its going out of business! I rate these, as well as Sturisoma, as the greatest of general algae eaters! My one does however eat some of the other foods I place in the tank (if any of it manages to reach the bottom), but still looks stick thin! Hehe! I did have two females, but one managed to get itself completely entangled in some rediculous thread type algae I had an issue with, and subsequently died.

    This one however is thriving....

    I'd be interested to know exactly which species yours is, as the markings are quite interesting and very different from mine. The Rostrum is also shorter, and the body wider than mine. I believe I have F. Acus, but from my reading on Farlowella's, there seems to be some confusion as to whether F. Acus is its own species, or a collective name for the whole group? My more reliable books don't even mention F. Acus as a species either, so I guess lots more digging and reading is in order? I'll see if I can find out which species yours is?

    Nice feesh by the way!

    Regards
    G!

    @Big G,

    Thanks.

    Mine must exist on algae alone. I don't clean the glass with the magnet anymore. I want to leave as much for the Twigs as possible.

    How do you sex them?
    No idea what species mine is. I bought them as "Farlowella sp". I tried to ID it on Planet Catfish but couldn't find an exact match.
    What books are you referring to?

    Btw, my lfs has Sturisoma breeding in their tanks. I was sooooo tempted to get one......

    @Reedfish...

    The better books I have are the Mergus/Baensch atlas'. I have the 'Catfish 1' book and a few of the 'normal' atlas' too. I then have a few others, but they do not sepcialise in Catfish, so all info is very vague.

    As for sexing... The Male usually has a wider set body, shorter Rostrum and the real give away... a beard! hehe! No seriously, they grow hairs on each side of their cheeks, that are usually appear whitish in colour. This normally asppears once they are sexually mature.

    And you are opening the floodgates if you are gonna talk about Sturisoma... One of my top 5 species. I managed to get a male St. Aureum a year or two back, and he was a stunning fish! Just never managed to find any others! What a fantastic algae eater that was too! I had a massive green algae outbreak in my display tank, to the point where you couldn't see in to the tank. Then, got up the next day to find the tank was mostly clear with just a few small patches left with large suckermouth ring shapes all over it! He must have spent the entire night eating! Unfortunately he died suddenly one night, which turned out to be my first casualty of an outbreak of Camellanus worms! Nasty buggers!

    I've been looking for them ever since, but being on a tight budget, I have never seen any I can justify the cost of! That one cost me R100 (just shy of 10 GBP), but all other 'quotes' I've had since are upwards of R300 each! Out of my league!

    I do however find the Sturisoma to be a bit more 'majestic' than the Farlowella's, but both are great species!

    Regards
    G!

    @Big G,

    I have a big collection of fish books too.
    Love reading up about what's in my tanks.

    Either my Twigs are 2 females, or they are too small still as they are not showing the hairs on their cheecks.

    Sturisoma.....might have another look at them when I got to my lfs this weekend......
    Will let you know how much they are...

    I deworm all new additions particularly wild caught fish.

    So what size are your Farlowella? The one in the photo looks to be female to me too, but without knowing exactly which species it is, it can leave an element of doubt?

    I generally find though that ONLY females are available, and if you manage to get a male, you are incredibly lucky! Thats for both Farlowella and Sturisoma!

    Lets see if we can find which species you have? Any other pics of them? And please do let me know if you get any Sturi's? Those I'd love to see pics of!

    Cheers
    G!

    @Big G,

    Well, I have just come back from my lfs.
    And I think I blame you......... in the nicest possible way. I came back with a Sturisoma panamense :dancing2:
    They had them there for £25. I wouldn't have paid that normally, but I was taking something else back, so I effectively only paid £5. :cool:
    I will post some photos under a seperate thread.

    My Twigs must be about 12/13cm.
    I had a look at the ones they had at the lfs, and they all did seem female.
    They had baby Sturis in their tanks, there must be a true pair in there.

    St. Panamense huh?! Nice!! Trust me, you will not regret it! They are stunning creatures, and fascinating to watch, although I have to admit that I would have walked striaight past the tank at that price, but then I'm a cheapskate budget man! Bargain basement kinda guy!

    As for the Farlowella, at that size they should have their 'beard' if they are going to have one, so yer, it sounds like you only have females? Still haven't narrowed down a specific species yet, but the thin and stubby Rostrum and wideset body is what is throwing me? I'll keep on searching!

    Cheers
    G!

    I wouldn't have paid that for the fish, but since I had some credit, I thought I may as well treat myself to something nice. It was either this, or a Plec.

    In David Sand's "Back To Nature Guite to Catfish", he says under Sturisoma that they are difficult to sex as the males get the bristles in breeding condition, but they are shed after the breeding season. So I guess this could apply to Farlowella too?
