My "Hikari" Discus foods that I get exclusively to feed the Discus, is extremely expensive down here (R127 for 80 grams), but I think it is this that makes my water: whiff: to intolerable measures...... When I lift the lid of my Discus tank, I wanna puke........ I've moved them 3 times in the last month because of water odour, but cannot ascribe it to anything else than the foods I feed...... Hikari for Discus???

    Does not sound good :(
Ask the prof for his food list. Way cheaper and as good as you are going to get.

Never ever had that problem in over a year that I fed Hikari Discus and it got to the point where my 6 would ONLY eat Hikari. When did the food expire? Cause it sounds like its past its best before date and is rotting.

As for the cost, have you tried contacting Happy Koi or ordering via their website? They are the South African distributors for it and IIRC paid not more than R80 for the 80g Discus pellets

If it is the food I can only imagine it would be uneaten food that is fouling the water. Otherwise maybe the food is not being properly digested and it's the poop thats giving off the smell. Alternatively there could be another cause for the smell, if I had to venture a guess I would say rotting drift wood or dead plants leaching some unpleasantness into the water. If you suspect the wood, try prodding it with a nail or a knife and check for soft/spongy areas.

I know that bad odours can make life hell, hope it gets sorted for you pronto.
    Regards

Run some carbon will help with the odour in the tank, are you not overfeeding?
