Estimative index shopping list

Does anyone (@TheGrissom ) have a good shopping list for estimative index for N, P, K and traces? (ie dischem). I currently use scape complete but I have a 4 channel WiFi dosing pump that I want to leverage more. I considered the scape individual products but it gets pricey. Also suggestions for an ei calculator that lists said ingredients (or the chemical name). I looked at old local forums and mostly found arguments unfortunately, or products that don’t exist or aren’t recognised by the calculators. It would be useful to know the common names (to source) and also the chemical formula (for the calculator). Hopefully this won’t degenerate into mudslinging but I don’t think it will because we seem to be a good community right now on TASA.

KNO3 = salt petre
MgSO4 = Epsom salts

For Iron you can use rust, I used to push panel pins into the substrate every so often

You may be able to get some chemicals from a chemical supplier - none of them are particularly dangerous. Maybe even expired stock, you dont need pharmaceutical grade for your purposes

 

Thanks! Don’t know how I didn’t find that calculator. So I should dose the amount the calculator gives over the course of a week with a 50% water change at the end of the week. The ei for dummies page on apsa was useful. Time to go shopping!

 

Went shopping today, here is my recipe: Saltpetre, Lenolax, Natures Choice Sodium Free Salt, Plaster of Paris, Epsom salts, Trelmix. Using the calculator I will dose NO3 10ppm, PO4 0.5ppm, K 10ppm, Ca 10ppm, Mg 2ppm and Fe 0.1ppm per week. Total cost for my 265 liter is about R8.66 per week. Next step is to buy a gram-scale with a straight face and research / figure out my dosing schedule. I also picked up a tetra APS50 airpump - my plan is to bubble the solutions for a minute or so on a timer before each dose in case it settles.

 

That sounds really good, really cost effective.

 

Consider saving yourself some pain and changing the measurements on the calculator to teaspoons. Measurement to the gram can become a headache.

 

I would caution using volumes as grain sizes and density of the chemicals can vary. This may throw off your ferts

 

Update: the macros sediment settles quite a bit after a few minutes and the airline doesn’t manage to get it back into suspension. So I’m investigating diy stirrers. Bubbles will work for micros though.

 

I’ll also try to find calcium carbonate rather than plaster of Paris - I think that’s the main sediment culprit. It also yields more Ca ppm per gram. Looks like brewing supply stores keep it.

 

I made a new macros mix and excluded the calcium. Hoping the crushed coral in my sump and water ageing tank will provide enough. Now it creates a nice solution and any sediment gets dissolved with a minute of bubbles before the dose schedule.

 

We use calcium carbonate by the 25kg here at work, I’m sure CJP Chemicals can sort you out with everything you’re looking for
