My power has been off since 8 this morning almost 16 hours in total I need aeration solutions for the tank just to make sure the fish make it I have a heavily planted 72l tank heat is not an issue. What can I do to ensure they make it till the power comes back. Can I blow into the airstone pipe every 10 20 min to aigitate the water is this ok. Any ideas pls I have no battery powered pumps so only diy ideas will help thanks so much

Just take a measuring jug, scoop water and pour it back in, repeat this a couple of times and repeat this every 1/2 hour or so.

Yes I can remember that thread last year.

    I would go for a inverter. 12v DC - 220V

    Example or Bigger One

The second one you should be able to run your heater also

Depending on what your budget is, you have various options available to you:

    • The most obvious option, do nothing and hope the blackout will last only a hour or two. During a short blackout your tank should not suffer any detrimental effects.
    • As Franna has mentioned, you can get a dry cell battery operated air pump that can power a sponge filter, air stone or standard corner filter. If you always have some spare batteries at hand, this air pump should be able to run for a good couple of hours. Fact is, these air pumps are normally quite small with a low output, and might not supply sufficient filtration for your tank during a long blackout. The bacteria in your power filters start dying, water temperature drops, and thing can go bad very quickly if you have a heavily stocked tank and temperature sensitive fish. Do not feed your fish during these extended blackout to reduce the waste production to a minimum, and cover the tank in a blanket to minimize heat loss.
    • Calculate the power requirement (Watts) of the equipment that is essential to ensure the survival of your fish during a blackout, and the period that you want to run this equipment from a alternate power source. Armed with this information you can now calculate the size of the inverter and deep cyclelead-acid battery that you require. You will also have to invest in a battery charger suitable to charge deep cycle batteries. A setup like this, that automatically kicks in when there is a blackout, can set you back R6000-00 or more.
So it is all about economics, and the setup that you have. Adding a air stone to a 500 liter tanks is not going to make much of a difference over a extended period, but then again, a 500 liter tank with low stock levels will maintain the water quality much longer that a 50 liter tank that is over stocked.

It does not matter how you cut it, you must have some sort of backup plan.
