I know I posted this last year sometime, but feel it's relevant to today.

Prices for Electricity is going up by 25% (in JHB) tomorrow (Not sure of the rest of the country), even though Eskom made a profit of R8.4 billion last year!

I don't want this thread to become a slating platform against Eskom and Government... I will close it if it does.

Please use the attached PDF for interest sakes... and you will also be able to calculate your new electricity usage per item.

    Hmmm...

the problem with the large hikes especially in this difficult economic period is the knock on effect that eventually leads to a few more small business owners closing there doors and not only losing food on their tables but also the employees increasing unemployment even further...

just my 2cents worth... (no slating involved :) )

I've heard that costs are going up in Durban too. I guess this means a few more tanks may be shut down sometime soon...

    So true what jwalker said.

A article was posted last week about a group of protesting environmental activists who dumped 5 tons of coal on of the entrances of Eskom's Johannesburg office. They were against the fact that eskom wasnt interested in using renewable energy resources or atleast switching away from Coal and its harmful environmental effects.

    Here's that article:
    http://www.news24.com/SciTech/News/5-tons-of-coal-dumped-at-Eskom-office-20110627

Other than that, its really difficult for me to comment and not blame, criticize and point at our government. So I'll rather shake my head in sadness and stop just here.

I wasn't sure if it was 25 or 27. Thanks for correcting.

or to start thinking about insulating your home better, getting double laminated window panes etc...

altho you are correct and a large body of water retains the heat much much more effectively than many smaller bodies of water.

I ended up insultaing my tanks with stirafoam on the back and sides and it seems like i am saving a little bit.

It might be 25% in JHB tho @Zoom Pretoria definitely is 27%. They fall under 2 different municipal areas.

    styrofoam works.

i may even consider throwing a blanket over the tanks at night, as this is the coldest part of the day...

I borrowed an electricity plug in meter from my electrician last week and did 3 tests.

Test one the tank was covered in styrafoam on back and 2 sides and i used 500 odd units of electricity.

Test two the tank was covered in styrafoam on all sides, and I used 330 units.

Test three the tank was covered with a towel over night, but left open during the day, and I used 480 units.

Tank exposed with no covering uses 600 units.

Same tank tested over a period of a week, timers stayed the same, nothing changed. All tests done over a 24 hour period. Room remained fairly constant temp, but not 100 percent same for the 5 days.

Was going to post this in a new thread but havent got round to it.

My findings, the styrafoam on 3 sides helped, but the saving didnt justify me making the tanks look so horrible with the styrafoam.
