Well I'm already making plans to change all my home lighting to 1watt led lights. Only thing is the price. I bought 1 as a tryout. Cost R120 each. Seems to be working great so far. Will cost me R2640 to change all the room, kitchen, lounge lights. Not possable to use in the bathroom or outside. You need light fittings of 3 or more lights to get enough light.

Will have to downsize then if that is what is going to happen.
I don't want to but there will be no other option... :(

The biggest consumer of electricity in most ouf our tanks is the heater... not really the pumps or the airpump really. So the people running multiple tanks could look at an option of running ONE sump for all the tanks... heat the sump water, and thus eliminate the heating expense.

The problem now would be that all your tanks would be the same perameters... so if you running different set-ups... i.e a discus set up compared to a guppy set up, you would run into problems.

    Anyone else have any idea?

running from 1 sump, if all the tanks are in one location, would not be a problem.. however for me where I got 1 tank in the lounge, 1 tank in the dining room and 1 tank in the kitchen, the sump is not an option. would the sump also not spread any disease if any (outbreak does occur) to other tanks??

    just a thought...

Zoom, you have forgotten about the other main power muncher... Your lights.... If someone can just come up with an affordable, reliable and strong enought LED set-up, you could save a small fortune on electricity there.
Depending on how many tanks you have and the positioning of them, using one sump feeding say 5 tanks you might save a small amount of money, as those heaters will have to switch on more than they will be switching off to keep 5 tanks on the correct temp.

:( I think MAJOR cut-downs will be in order - my electricity account is already WAY above what I EVER thought it could be - another increase will take me into crazy rates. Dunno - perhaps stop cooking? LoL

for us, its critical to find a space heating solution... any ideas?

PS: I'm not a fan of sumps as the cost associated with a disease outbreak far outweighs the electrical costs. I used to be a fan and my tanks are drilled and can all be plumbed up in a flash. Main problem here is the lack of good quality UV sterilizers in the country - the chinese models available are not able to provide disease control and the locally made ones cant either simply because the lamps used in those devices dont burn at the correct temperature to be effective and also the flow through contact time is not correct. So the only option is to import a proper unit which starts at around R3500 for one 55W unit and then for my setup I would most likely need about 6 of those minimum. And then you still need to factor in its running costs... so space heating solutions please...

PPS: the increase cost of electricity will cause the cost of aquatic livestock to increase...

in good time we will all be so used to the new electric cost that it will be normal to be ripped of on electricity.

As we get ripped of on so many other things in this country.

I read on news 24 somewhere that if you take the entire world's rate per K.watt and convert it to US dollars, we are still the cheapest in the world when it comes to buying electricity.
