    Hi All,

Here is a (not so good) photo of my EBJD taken this morning.
It has doubled in size in the 2 months that I have had it.

wow ... what a stunning fish. I did a quick ggl to see how they grow and mature, seems like they have a bit of transformation as they mature. Interesting that people recommend dark substrates so that the colours do not "wash-out", makes total sense since these fish come from murky waters in the first place.

:hmmmm: I'm confuzzed... I've always loved the way these fish look - so, I looked up the scientific name and found three... (Archocentris octofasciatus, Nandopsis octofasciatus, Cichlasoma octofasciatum) and then I know the JD's are bl so I looked them up there and found one of those, Cichlasoma octofasciatum, but the common name given is eight barred cichlid?

Anyone got any ideas on the correct nomenclature?

Currently I believe it is Rocio octofasciata.

Many central American cichlids are getting/have been shuffled around recently, as previously many were simply just lumped into Cichlasoma.

    Nice cichlid by the way!

I believe it has been through a number of name changes. As have a lot of cichlids.

It was almost white, with only a faint hint of blue when I got it. But it seems to have coloured up nicely. In fact, it can change colour in a matter of seconds. If another fish challanges it, it can go an inky blue, almost black.

The EBJD is supposed to be quite fragile, in comparison to the standard form, from what I have read.
So far, mine seems hardy enough.

    DON'T do that.
You'll always grumble about losing, or grin about winning...
:idea:either way have a drink at the expense of the loser( or is it winner??)

    Cichlids WILL convert people alright:bigsmile:

I really LIKE Electric blue jack Dempseys !
So much so , that when I couldn't get them, at first it bugged me
When I could obtain them, THEN they weren't AFFORDABLE to say the least.

    Since then.....
To pay for my sins, I recently splurged on a group of MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE Thai Silk FlowerHorn, until I can get some EBJD
*Have a look at these spectacular fish for a single Show specimen, boisterous large fish community, or ambitious spawning project

    @Altum,
Yup, the aggression with cichlids does get annoying.
I have carefully stocked my tank. Singletons, and from my research the milder species. But now and then all hell breaks loose, and then I have to remove the offender.

    Stunning fish. I love cichlids!
Is this one of those that have to be bred like father to daughter, mother to son... Has anyone local bred these beauts?
    I'd be interested in fry!

    Thanks.
It's a bit bigger than it was in the photo, about doubled in size since I first got it.

I have never seen the flower horns sold locally? Are they available in SA?

EBJD is just a color verity/morph of the regular JD so yes that too would be considered Black Listed, good luck with him I have also read they are hard to get to adulthood.
