    Hi all! Has anyone here kept Electric Blue Jack Dempseys? I'm considering getting one or two, so would be most obliged if anyone has some tips and tricks. I'm especially interested in knowing from what size they can be sexed. I would be introducing the 5cm EBJD into a tank with 2 x 12-15cm red shoulder Severums. Shouldn't be an issue hey?

    @Broder

    Ebjd have a reputation of being sensitive and difficult.
    I have kept them twice.
    First time was before I kept Discus in a mixed SA/CA community.
    It did well but grew slowly

    2nd time I got one around Xmas time. It got some sort of bloat and died a few days ago :cry:

    Thanks @Reedfish. Good to hear it confirmed that they are sensitive. Sorry to hear that yours didn't make it though. I suppose they're sensitive because they're actually a mutation of regular Jack Dempseys? At least that's how I understand their lineage.

    Could be.
    And I think they are very inbred.

    My first one was as tough as any other cichlid I had.

    The trouble with my 2nd was:
    When I was feeding my Rays some Earthworms.
    EBJD grabbed one and took a long time (over 2 hours) to get it all in. A day or so after it started showing similar symptoms to Discus with flagellate issues. Ie it went dark, wouldn't eat, clamped fins etc, followed by bloat a few days after that.
    Only speculation, but I suspect it caused some sort of internal abrasion/discomfort/indigestion that got infected and further complications.

    Yeah... Sounds like yours may have succumbed to a problem digesting the worm. Didn't know that could happen. I'll be sure to feed only bite size pieces then. Thanks for the heads up.

    Slightly less here... R300 @4-5cm. I've resisted purchasing any yet as one has a few white spots. As these are apparently sensitive fish, I'd rather wait a week or so to see how strong they are before putting them into quarantine.

    A lfs I went to shortly after I got mine had some for the same price but must have been 10cm. Stunning fish, but as I had one already,I left it.
    Anyhows

    They are really fantastic fish, and I think in the long term, well worth the effort.

    It had the more evenly distributed colour of an adult.

    I've just picked up 2 X 6cm specimens from our local LFS. They look in great shape, although I don't think I have a pair. No problem though... I won't have any problem selling a spare, if and when they grow out.

    Hahaha saw these fish this morning for the first time in my LFS.
    Do you know how they are bred this way (just linebred?)

    @DoubleDutch, as far as I've been able to gather, an electric blue Jack Dempsey must be crossed with a regular Jack Dempsey that has the blue gene. Some say that it needs to be a female EBJD with a male BGJD, but that hasn't been confirmed afaik. Only about 25% of the offspring between the EBJD and BGJD will be EBJD. These apparently have a high mortality rate as they are mutations.
    EBJD are not selectively bred, but are mutations of regular Jack Dempseys and occur naturally in the wild too.

    @Broder

    i have heard similar.
    apparently you cannot breed a pair of EBJD.
