So whilst in Cape Town on business last week we had occasion to eat supper at a well known Steak restaurant at Mouille Point. I suffer from high cholesterol and try stay away from red meat as much as I can, and besides, being on the coast should bring fresh sea fish should it not? Well we arrived fairly late and were told that they were out of linefish for the day. I asked the waitron to recommend a fish from the menu and was told they have a special on some or other fish I had never heard of. The pronunciation made things a bit tricky seeing that it was done in a very broad "Kapie" accent. To make a long story short, the meal arrived, it was tasty but very clearly not a saltwater fish. There were absolutely no bones in a large fillet so I started having my suspicions. Upon further questioning, the floor manager confirmed that I was in fact eating frozen Pangasius imported from Vietnam.

As far I know Pangasius has been earmarked as a potential substitute for hake, given the rate at which we're reducing stock numbers. They reckon it's more that feasible given how easy it is to farm Pangasius.

    I actually enjoy farmed Tilapia!
Don't otherwise eat freshwater fish, that's why I was curious.

Catfish is hugely popular in Europe, usa, Asia, and most of Africa, I think we lag the global trend somewhat

Pangasius aint too bad....tried it when i was in Asia, actually ordered it of a menu....as well as horse(wasnt my choice, didnt know)..........but if one considers the various species in the hobby trade that that can actually be introduced in South Africa (as most of these are food in their native countries) Pangasius, giant gouramis, tiger shovelnose, pacus ,and the likes .......these are rapid growing fish that reach a decent size in a relatively short space of time........"AND ON THE MENU TODAY IS........."
