EI and Carbon?

im gonna start by asking @Sean J @Lloydster

when dosing EI into a tank, will it be safe to still use carbon in the filters? will this not remove any of the "goodies" that we are trying to add?

hey bud!

it is quite fine to do so.. you might remove very small amount of certain trace elements but nothing that will effect your plant growth or health. this is minuscule amounts.
i personally dont like using any chemical media in my filters only if it is to remove meds or on tank start up ect. the great's like Amano also runs his tanks with just bio logical ceramics or equivalent like "BIO RIO" so its best just to go that route.
but you pritty safe either way just dont forget to replace the carbon once its exhausted.

Yeah, what Lloyd said... If you start a tank the ADA way, you run carbon for the first month or so, but then you take it out and run 100% bio filtration.

Either way, it's not a train smash.

 

Bigger question - why have you been running carbon?

Remember EI does regular resets via WC so it works because you are affectively over dosing a bit then doing a flush. I'd be more concerned about the possibility of the carbon leaching back into the water what you wanted it to fix in the first place.
