    Hi Guys,

I will combine this post with my introduction. I used to keep freshwater until 2007 when I converted to saltwater reef. My tank settled wonderfully and started to look great until our landlord sold our rental home in 2009 and we had to move. This was the first move of three in a years time and everything just went haywire. The tank went through a series of cycles and we lost a few expensive corals and fish. We finally decided to sell the tank somewhere around the end of 2010. Some who have been active on MASA a while might remember me as Mtroboer as I used to post frequently over there.

Needless to say I have been itching to get back into the hobby after we bought our own home and have been searching OLX, Gumtree and local Facebook for sale pages for a few months now. Two weekends ago I spotted a complete 4ft show tank with LED's being advertised for R1000. I called the guy immediately after seeing the ad and went to have a look at it. When I got there I saw that the tank was on a bare red-oxide painted stand and the LED's was not actually LED lighting as advertised, but rather LED moonlights. Imagine my surprise however when I asked about the filtration and the guy showed me a Eheim Classic 2250 canister! The Filter was in a decent condition and in excellent working order, silent and pumping a strong stream of water. I immediately payed the guy after considering what I actually got as it even included 13 Malawi's. After getting home and having a closer look at the filter I actually saw the words "Made in West Germany" on both the canister and pump. Am I wrong in assuming that it means that this filter was made before or around the fall of the Berlin Wall? I just can't believe that something almost as old as me is in such a good working order! Could it be much newer or is it just a testament to German engineering and the quality of Eheim products?

PS. I will be cladding the frame during the week and will build a wooden lip with suspended lighting over the tank with some oak wood I have left after a home project.

No idea on the age of the Eheim, but a big welcome back to fish keeping. Looks like you scored a bargain right there!

The wall came down in 1989, so unless old tooling was used for a while thereafter it may well date from around that time. On us sites you read of eheims over 20 years old, only downside would be high energy consumption.

20W would be good even by today's standards, providing it delivers 1000l+ ph. I had a look at one of the older design eheims classics couple of weeks ago, rated 65W, costs over R7000, so this is certainly a good buy.

Yeah - I am not sure what is happening to Eheim in SA ... but even the old stock has been re-priced and that is hectic.

I like to have some idea what the EUR price is .. then go hunting in LFS to see if I can spot old sticker stock ...

    http://www.aquaristikshop.com/aquaristic/filter-technic/external-filters/eheim/ is my guide.

300 EUR = +_ R5100 and that is less of a sting than say R7k that I have seen asked in local LFS in the past.

That 65 Watt was for a EHEIM classic 1500 XL -2260- right? - so yeah the 7K is a bit much.

I do think Hamrammr got a good deal ... either way a good start to MTS ;-)

    Now post some FTS's

    Later Ferdie

I agree with the great deal and on top the reliability of the equipment. If only today's equipment lasted... I have another heater that has just packed in.

The Eheim classics (2211, 2213, 2215, 2217) have been made in China since 1999. Anything prior was made in Germany. I have confirmed this directly with Eheim in Germany just prior to buying my 2217 a few months back. I believe all other Eheim canisters are still made in Germany (except the above mentioned Classic series). Eitherway, OP, your Eheim 2250 (irrespective of age) im sure will serve you well for many years to come!

Thanks for all the replies! Sorry I did not reply sooner but I had a hectic week at work with a hijack and all. I will post a few pics on the filter a bit later as I find it very curious due to its age. I also checked and it stated a 28w consumption on the pump which I reckon is not bad at all for a 25+ year old pump rated for 1200lph. I am now already itching to get a larger tank knowing that filtration is covered!
