One of the side effects of being a student is that there is usually someone smoking "hubbly" in my apartment.

I was just wondering if anyone has come across any information on the consequences of smoking on our fish?

    Yes -

the fish owner dies with emphysema (COPD) then the fish are left without a loving owner and soon the tank is for sale on Junkmail - the fish did not survive the ordeal.

    -

The biggest factor is the cost of smoking - all that extra money could have been spent on developing a healthy MTS addiction.

Ha ha I agree dont smoke and never will, but a little cherry hubbly every now and then is another story :)

Anyway it actually is a serious question, my flatmate and our friends pump alot of smoke into the apartment, so just logically I would assume that has some sort of corresponding effects on the water chemistry of our fish tanks. What I would be interested in finding out is whether this is a quantifiable concern!?

In a bad case, the fish become second-hand smokers. Worst case scenario: they pick up the habit and join a gang.

    I don't recommend it.

probably depends on how the remaining tar and whatnot (in normal smokes) dissolve in water and if the quantity has any effect on chem composition.

why don't you ask one of the chem-major lab-rats to check it out for you (i say that affectionately, not derogatory, my ex is a white coated lab-rat:D ), they'll probably be interested in analyzing the situ.

with hubbly, the chems that could be problematic, probably already dissolve in the hubbly chambers, i dunno

Yo eskimo, you say you are a student, how do you manage your setup when you get back home for the holidays. Assuming you don't live in the same area.

What type of setup do you have by the way?

My setup can easily last 3 months without a water change and is fairly self sufficient when it comes to live food for the fish but it has crashed and burnt on the odd holiday(mostly the rare plants)

oh and its not a specific type of setup more a "liquorish all sorts" effect :p

I have to agree with most of the people here, I myself smoke hubbly around my tank and I have not noticed anything weird so I doubt that there is any effect on the fish.
great setup you have there man.
FYI - you should try golden amber tobacco it is pretty good as well...lol

soooo, who is a chem boffin here? someone with chemistry might be able to help, like the Prof.

( i usually tried my best to add more chems to my 1st year chem class experiments to get it smoking or boiling or turn weird colours etc, so i'm useless at it:) )
