My Oscars just love earthworms, but my wife says that it is harmfull for the fish and tank. Is there anyone out there that can confirm ? You know she is nearly always correct... I plan to start my own worm nest....

Hey oosie I can confirm that they aren't harmful to your Oscar or your tank I have been feeding my Oscar for months now, they have a high protein value for your fish and a excellent source for life foods easy to keep and easy to breed. My Oscar also goes nuts for them here is two videos I took when I am feeding him worms:

    Video #1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxdEP7iJ_Bg

    Video #2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZfZBHpUD9I

Also I started a thread sometime ago on how to keep/breed red worms for your Oscar or any other fish for that matter here: http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?t=4271 Give it a read I included my small DIY attempts at keeping them and also links to websites saying how to keep and breed them. The thread also gives you the nutritional value of worms.

Just remember oosie everything in moderation even too much of a good think is bad for an Oscar so I dont feed him the worms every day only once or twice a week.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks my friens, I plan to give him a treat every now and then, I used to go to the fish shop, and for R15.00 got a handfull of worms. In The long run it would be better to breed them myself. By the way.. my oscar ate my clown loach.....

That is were I started off with my breeding stock bought a couple of those R15 tubs from Sollies and took it from there. Yeah they say you can keep clown loaches with Oscars but then the loaches must be full grown dont worry my Oscar is a little terror, killed and ate a couple of apple snails and a algae eater. Also broke 2 thermometers.

Just curious. What happenes when the thermometer breaks, does the shortening cause the fish to get electrocuted for a split second before the mains trip?

No, cause the fish aren't grounded.
