I know that overseas these fish suffer form being susceptible to many diseases. This is largely to do with the use of antibiotics. Is the case the same here in sa.

If given incorrect care, fish will be more susceptible to disease, no matter their origin or antibiotic use.

Apparently Dwarf Gouramis are quite susceptible to Fish TB

In the East, where they are bred in large numbers, I believe they are treated with antibiotics.
Since most of the fish in SA will be from these sources, I guess the risk of them having this disease does exist.

If you have Dwarfs, just keep an eye.

Hi, been keeping dwarf gouramis for a while, quaranteeing them is the best option but if you are a bit suspicious a small amount of broad-spectrum antibiotic will do the trick.

But does that not compound the problem and possibly lead to anti-biotic resistant bacteria?
Which is why I think this is becoming more prevalent with these fish.

If it was me, and one of my fish had this, I would humanely destroy it, as unpleasant as that may be.

BS anti-biotic can be found a LFS but there is usually a wider variety online.

If you constantly use it then yes, resistance can build up, but if it is being used as a once off thing then it's highly unlikely.

There is a worldwide issue in DG's.
The pressure/overbreeding of this beautiful fish caused it got a terrible Iridovirus. It opens the immunesystem making it more vunerable for infections of all kinds.

    Antibiotics don't treat virusses !!!!

I haven't treated with medication in years.
And TBH, the only fish I would contemplate medicating are my Rays

In my experience. Most mild ailments tend to sort themselves out. And most serious ailments result in the death of the fish anyway.
I am not a vet. And although I have numerous books on fish disease, it's still a semi educated guess.
And I am not keen to use all sorts of meds in my tank because I think a fish has xyz disease.

The dead of hundreds and hundreds of DG's on the Dutch forum exact was the reason why I started to join foreign forums.
Within two days after joining the UK-forum someone (Ian) came up with DGIV (or DGD). A worldspread issue in Asian bread DG's (and allready in some other species with less health-issues). The fish are bred in medicated / antibiotic filled tanks to prevent infection before selling. When they "hit" our water the issues occure.

To be honest an importban from Asia would be the only thing that might help.
But the trade only thinks about selling fish (every dead one is a new one) so that won't happen.

Terrible conclusion on such an awesome fish.

The next victim are asian bred neon tetra's which now often have a specific strain of Columnaris in them.

Terribe side of our hobby in my opinion.

Thinking the DG's in SA are also sourced from Asia I am afraid the issue will be exact the same.

Here nowadays we also have Czech bred ones. Though stock from the Czech republic often isn' t that great the DG's are quite healthy and DGIV-free.

Local breeders are the best choice !
