It might be that I am dumb or something but when we buy fish at your local LFS for example angels and you buy 4 of them and they breed is it not true that they are siblings (TRUE or FALSE)

So if I am correct isn't that inbreeding

Johan: I don’t agree with Gareth completely. It may be a possibility, but that all depends on where the LFS is getting the stock from. If he is buying stock from a hobbyist like most of us are, then the chances are highly likely that the fish you are buying all come from the same spawn. But on the other hand, if it is imported stock, the chances are much smaller that the fish are from the same stock. These guys have hundreds of pair that breed, and all the fry get mixed in the same grow out tanks. Just my two cents worth.

    Thanx Kuhli Loach

But if it does happen that you buy from the same spawn what are the changes of the fry being misformed or something and will it show in the first batch or not or maybe when u breed with the parent baby or baby baby ?

I think a lot of fish we see nowadays are 'line bred' which if I understand correctly means that u take the best kids of a pair and then breed them, and then take their best kids etc... I believe this is how we end up with long fin varieties of certain fish, or different colour strains? So, basically, it seems that fish are not as affected by insestuous breeding as humans are? Please correct me if I'm wrong someone? Cheers! Big G!
