    You don't want duckweed.
Something easier to manage would be Frogbit.
Duckweed is a pest, and extemely difficult to get rid of once it has established itself in your tank.

What type of shrimp are you looking for?
    Also, what colour of shrimp?

The easiest to start off with would be Neocaridina Davidii shrimp.
Those are typically the Red Cherries, Blue Dreams, Pumpkin and wild colouration shrimp.
Once your tank has cycled a bit, and has aged sufficiently, you can introduce these shrimp.
They prefer stable water conditions, and while a tank is still fairly new, the water parameters can fluctuate a bit, which is not good for these shrimp.

Shrimp prefer a dark substrate, which also makes their colours brighten.
A small leaved plant like Susswassertang, Java Moss or similar is appreciated.
It provides a place for the shrimp to graze on, and also hiding place for the shrimplets.

Tank wise, you can get away with any size tank, although bigger is always better.
Setting up a 4ft tank for 10 RCS is a bit of overkill if you're just starting out though.
To get going and getting used to keeping shrimp, a small 15 litre tank with a small sponge filter will be ideal.
Add some dark sand, plant a small cryptocoryne or two, add some driftwood with Susswassertang attached, and you will have the ideal tank for 10 RCS.
If everything goes well, you should have 50 shrimp in that tank within 2 months.

Aqua Empire in Mulders Drift has a wide variety of shrimp, from wild colouration, to stunning Bloody Mary Neocardina.
They also have all the tanks, filters and plants you may need.
It's a bit of a drive from Alberton, but will be worth it.

Alternatively, there should be members closer to you that could help out with livestock.

This is what a dam covered in duckweed looks like...
The dam is situated in the Dinokeng Nature Conservancy, and the duckweed was introduced by a person wanting to wash out a goldfish bowl.
