Get an electronic anti-bark colar. Now people is going to jump up and down again, but I still insist it is humane and the way to go!

The gadget shop has an bark detector if the dog barks it makes a loud sound in the 22Khz range and stops the dogs from barking

Also it depends on the dog breed on how well the collars work.

@Zoom we have some very nasty bylaws here. If the dog barks more than 6 mins a day they can take it away and put it down.

I'd like to see that bylaw enforced. I promise you if it was enforced, we wouldnt have problems like this...

In the more swanky parts of town they enforce the bylaw hecticly. Rather large fines are issued etc. I havent heard of a dog actually being taken away yet but its only a matter of time.

The electronic anti bark colar work by sensing the dogs vocal cords. On detection, it vibrates the colar as a reminder to the dog. If the dog continues, a weak correction is given, if he continues, the correction is increased a bit and so on, till he stops. All is with pauses in between obviously.

So, the dog is allowed to bark. His natural instinct dictates when he stop. In the case of an intruder, he is not going to stop. You also have the option to select the max correction level. So all the colar is doing, is it is removing the urge to bark for pleasure or the hell of it.

When you buy, ensure you buy a quality brand name. I made the mistake of trying the cheapies from the east. I returned the complete order and still lost all my money on it.

I sell them under NWS on the forum. Prices is outdated, I have no stock at the moment and the rand is too weak to order now. But it is an indication and can be ordered if you require.

Dogs often bark when they are lonely and bored or if they were never taught as a puppy that it is improper behaviour. Paulsea it is the correct thing to address the problem and not to blame your neighbour, since he is not the one at fault when he complains. A dog barking all day can be a huge frustration.

Spend more time with your dog like playing a bit and taking him for a walk every day. Dogs who are treated as part of the family will behave totally different from dogs that receive no attention at all. Also when you are at home and he starts barking at nothing, speak to him so that he can understand that it is improper behaviour.

No, look, I agree totally with aquas on this one. A dog that barks constantly is an insecure dog. Remember they are pack animals, and need boundaries. A dog with a very strict owner will actually be healthier and happier than a dog that is allowed to do as he pleases.

Dogs are also social animals, and need to be part of the pack, ie your family. I always maintain... 'shame, that dog is not happy, listen to it barking all the time.'

well said @AquaS case in point we have people saying behind us that got a yorky for their daughter because the poor lil thing was dragging a boogie board around (insert rolled eyes here) soon as the puppy was not a puppy any more they lost interest he starts barking at like 5/6am and yaps all day till the kids get home from school, they dont play with him but he is in the garden wen they scream bloody murder all afternoon. i feel very sorry for him, a yorkie is supposed to be a lap dog and companion the ironic thing when my mom mentioned it to the owner she told her her dog doesnt bark.

i couldnt imagine not having my dog slping in my room, snores and all. and lets be honest if you have a burgler in your home where would you want your dog, in the yard going bonkers trying to reach you or in your room between you and the intruder.

No I do not talk dog .. but dogs have different barks .. they talk to each other via barks. So 1 dog two blocks away sees an interest, he tells the others to get to the gate and have a look. Also they do not like things they can not control - like birds in a tree can send them around the bend - or a cat on a wall. None of these barks have anything to do with the pack or the happiness of the mutt(s).

I would actually think a neighbourhood that has barking dogs is less up-tight than one where the owners are getting on each others case because of the dogs barking. I think you will also find a barking dog neighbourhood has more people walking the dogs locally.

Each case needs to be looked at and judged on the full set of information.

Paulsea - Actually it makes complete sense that it is the pensioner that complains, since this person is home all day and know exactly what is happening in the area. Neighbours that work all day will not have a clue what is going on in the neighbourhood while they are at work.

80% of old people complain about everything. At my old place in Equestria the old lady next door Started complaining because my cat mewed (spelling) too much. I mean honestly. After the second time she complained I said screw this and moved out because I could see her becoming a problem.

And dogs bark. It's their nature. Our dogs only really barks when people walk close to our fence or when Haddidas sit on our roof but I don't really care. Its that same dog that woke us up about 5 times when intruders were in our yard (They were/are building a new building next to our home and kept on jumping over the wall at night) The kind of bark a dog makes while you sleep when it knows there is danger is a Crappy thing to wake up to. Very high pitched but it gets you awake fast.
