its a flower stem - it will make plantlets on the stem... when they have a large-ish root you can clip them off and plant them one by one

Describe this "runner" - it could be a flower!

My plant also made these hard stems and had a little 4 leaf flower looking thing on it, I thought it was a small plant and turned the amazon on its side so i could get this stem slightly under the gravel. But its been weaks and still no roots????? What could this be?

leave it upward to grow out the water, mine has done the same thing and i now have about 5 plantlets with loads of roots. im still waiting for the flower to appear it takes awhile though mine have taken about 2 months too get where they are now.

Windfire - from what i have seen in my tanks the there wont be flowers if the plantlets form. i guess the motherplant rather puts the energy into plantlets than flowers

I heard somewhere that you can take a feather and tickle it to induce pollenation to open the flower
