Eheim is the most expensive. But it's because they are brilliant filters. Quality comes with a price tag.
The Fluvals are also well pricey, but they are also very good filters. Not sure of pricing.
Tetra Tech is probably the cheaper of the 3 makes, but from what I've heard, they are also really good filters.

My money would go to the Eheim. Any day of the week. For a 250L tank you could go with the Eheim Classic 2217. It's a great filter and it is the cheaper of the eheims. Still their best design. Shouldn't cost more than R1500.

Thats a pretty open ended question. For what size tank? I have eheims here that start at like R1300 right up to R7000..... but then they vary from 100L tanks to 2000L tanks....

Ah i need to stop speed reading! For a 250L i would go for the 2217 like @Sean J said. I have a few of them and they havent given me a seconds problem.

@OscaCT unfortunately you cant compair Dolphin filters to Fluval and Eheim. @dylan woodhouse - where are you based? Perhaps contact one of your local sponsors?

Henk, I do agree, but they are good value for money and at the end of the day, they get the job done.

The people having them also does not seem to complain

I have had Dolphin filters and I agree that they do get the job done, but when it comes to specialist tanks where water quality is of utmost importance then they fall a bit short due to the fact that the dolphin filters have a lot of the water flow going past the baskets around the edges where the other filters mentioned have better more tight fit designs.

@Double-D Good point...I haven't noticed that. I will take my one apart and see if I can DIY it to decrease those tolerances... I think a piece of nitrile would do the job just fine.

Baby steps you have a filter in the tank just improve it by adding better filtration media like seachem purigen and some ceramic rings with nitrate pads ? ,Then safe up for a big one,And with the bucks you saved you can get a nice plant to hide the filter
    My 2 cents
