A little while back I was a bit taken aback when someone mentioned that their goldfish had died, but that 3 months wasn't too bad for a cold water fish.

I didn't comment at the time, as it was someone new to the hobby, and I didn't want to post a negative comment.

This morning I was browsing an old copy of Practical Fishkeeping, and came across the following little article: (from issue 4, no author accreditation given)

So, as I had a little time free, I set myself the task of listing all my present fishies and their expected lifespans:
    Khuli loach 10 years +
    Swordfish 3 - 5 years
Black Widow Tetras 5 years +
    Threadfin Rainbowfish 4 years +
    Zebra Loach 10 years +
    Endlers 2 - 3 years
    Bosemanni Rainbowfish 5 - 8 years
    Ancistrus 10 - 12 years
    Brochis splendens 5 years
    Corydoras sterbai 10 - 15 years
    Goldfish 10 years +

It would be interesting to see what fish you are all keeping and what their expected lifespans are!

I do know the average for my Cichlids but this might be something most people dont know.

"one famous scarlet koi, named "Hanako" was owned by several individuals and supposedly lived to 226 years old, based on examining one of her scales in 1966. The usual longevity is more like 47 years old"

Threadfin rainbowfish - its all I own. And apparently lives for 4 years. But it starts breeding between 6 and 9 months :)

    Wow!

I managed to get my hands on 6 of them about two weeks ago! Seems I'm going to be lucky enough to have 3 males and 3 females! I've still got them in a separate tank, too scared to put them into the community tank yet! They are beautiful!

Do you have a thread on them?

Oh wow! I've always got my nose plastered to the tank at the lfs housing the Black Ghost Knifes! Beautiful! You are so lucky!

Ps: With lifespans like that I guess that at certain age lifespan becomes a bigger consideration in choosing fish than tank size does! Ha-ha!

    Hahaha yes definitely

Yes they are beautiful, my ghost is my favorite fish he's about 30-35cm(not sure he's hard to measure) at the moment and he'll get 45-50cm in the next year if not less.
My 250L tank is a bit small(120Lx45wx47h) it needs to be 65+cm wide and 1.5+m long. So I'm planning to up grade as a 17th birthday present in october.

Nice thread :) I was surprised that Cories are so long lived.

I got this info from the Aquarium Wiki. It was quite difficult finding the info and there was a big discrepancy regarding life spans; not many sites agree.

Teacher Tracy, that was a fun homework task you set for us :p

Based on the "Red Bellied Piranha - 10 years" I guessing this is more of a general informative list than based on an actual collection?
