    Hey guys,
I hate being the kind of person to argue about something I don't know, so I come to you to find out whether goldfish jump or not.
I believe that most fish will jump out of a tank given the chance. It's probably a game to them. who knows... anyway, I've seen a few accounts on the internet saying that goldfish DO jump, but I want to find out from other people too.

Yes they do, sometimes they do it when the water quality is not right.

lol I think that even if they were been tail nipped by a couple of black widow tetras they will not jump.

Although I've never actually seen them jump, I have many times found them outside of the pond, which is why it has a cover on.

Thus I can only assume that they do in fact jump.

Mine don't jump. Theyre in an uncovered container on the ground. But mine are fancy goldfish-I think the faster shubunkins etc do jump

    I think they do jump.

Theres actually a record for a goldfish that jumped and stayed on the floor for something like 10 hours and survived:smile1:

All his fins stuck to the floor.

Heard it on the radio one day, somebody was talking about his goldfish that jumped out of its bowl.

When my susters fish died her little girl found the tank empty the next morning and since then she have been telling everyone that the fish ran away:bigsmile:
Maybe this is how it all starts.

It was one of those with the bubble cheeks. She thinks the reason is because he was cross all week:bigsmile:

I think you may find that they do Jump when chased and this usually happens during the breeding season t the beginning of Spring when the water warms up. The males tend to chase the females quite relentlessly and the female will try and jump out of the water to get away. Even though Spring is the normal breeding period they will also try to breed if the temperatures drop and then rise, as has been the case in the Jo’burg area over the last few weeks. My Goldfish in the pond have been very frisky recently and while none have jumped out of the pond, I have seen them jumping up the waterfall.

thanks Goldfish ^_^ that makes a lot of sense to me.

So it's safe to say that not all goldfish jump, but they might jump given the right incentive.

Yes they most certainly do jump!!

Does vary according to species! My Comet used to jump regularly. My Chocolate Oranda jumped out my tank, and I found him around 2 metres away dried to the floor! My dad scraped him up and put him in a tank with some salt, and after the furry scar had gone (from where he was stuck to the floor), he was fine!! Lived another 2 years!!

I used to keep Carp (same family as common Goldfish) in UK, and they jumped regularly for flies or any food on the surface! In fact, I used to go carp fishing, and regularly saw various sized carp upto around 20+ Kgs jumping!

Then theres Koi (also related), also good at jumping should they choose to!

    So yes, goldfish do jump!

    Cheers
    Big G
