Has anyone had any success in diy root tabs in south africa? I've seen old threads using osmocote plus but I don't seem to find it anywhere and it costs a fortune to ship in and even then Amazon is out of stock. I am aware of terrestrial ferts cause ammonia spikes but I've seen alot of success with the osmocote with no casualties if it's in a deep enough substrate. I found this general plant food that I can put into empty pill tabs but since I'm new to this I'm not sure if there's any trace elements that are harmful etc that osmocote plus doesn't have. I also found a osmocote alternative but it has less micro nutrients then osmocote but the general food I found has about the same. Anyone have any success or advice as to what ferts I can use for diy root tabs other then osmocote? Multifeed classic is what I want to try and the extra image is what the osmocote knockoff looks like.

I’ve run into some issues with osmocote balls popping up from under the substrate, releasing unwanted nutrients into the water column…

where do you usually get them from? Seachem root tabs are expensive and these may be worth a try in a fishless tank

Seachem also doesn't get close to the amount of macro and micro nutrients osmocote gives you.. It's just I think you need a thick layer of sand to prevent it from emerging. There is a supplier in south africa but you need to buy a big amount from them to sell you anything because they don't really sell to individuals otherwise you could buy the tabs on eBay or the osmocote on Amazon and such and ship it in.. But it still costs a hefty amount. There is a guy that told me he sells the tabs, he is based in jhb but I'll have to wait to buy till next month xD abit tight this month. It's not a bad price either but if I have to ship it to me I'd have to buy enough to last me quite awhile otherwise the shipping isn't worth it.

    I have a related question.....

When I got my Lotus plants last year, the supplier suggested put Osmocote granules around the base of the container, before filling in the soil. Easy access for the roots.
And then repeat every season going forward.
So first year was easy, as it's when I planted them up.
But this year I just sprinkled some on top of the substrate. Don't really want to be digging into it and possible damaging the rhizomes.

Will the nutrients find their way down in to the soil towards the roots ??

    I have Osmocote at home.
    Mine don't float.
    Never had any issues.

You generally want to avoid that volume of ferts entering directly into the water column. People use dissolvable tablets, put osmocote in, then inject it into soil somehow.

There aren't any fish in the container, so from that point of view, not an issue.
But am questioning whether the nutrients will permeate into the soil

I’m not convinced that it will permeate the soil effectively. I got gel captules from Dischem (cheap) and filled them with osmocote. Then easy to push into the soil.
But as said above, in aquariums having constant issues with osmocote pellets finding their way up out of the (thick) substrate and leaching excess nutrients
