I have built one one these in the past and added some moss too it, but I broke it up after I got the canister but seeing the amount of flow I was getting in my tank I built a newer better version and it works great. I took a 2 litre ice cream tub and cut out the base, leaving a slight edge on one side, I then warmed up the plastic and bent it at the correct angles for it to fit in under my HOB filter and this is the results:

As a added bonus my new design gives me a lot of surface aggregation which the fish seems to enjoy.

im sorry i do not see the benefit of this, what is the point of it other than causing less flow in your tank (less flow in tank is not a benefit in my opinion)?

@cheekychops: It is a 1200 lph filter in a 80 litre tank..and there is something like too much flow in a tank...then I have a canister that does 300 lph so my tank turns into a tide pool when both filters are running at full kilt.

ok, so you dont need the flow and the tank is already filtered very well, then why put a hang on back also?

@cheekychops: More filtration never hurt and the results in water quality speak for itself:

Also my tank is pretty much stocked to it's limit so rather safe than sorry. And like they say if not why not. And the planted HOB filter shows the nitrates which means I only do a 50% water change once a month.

Yeah that is how we do planted hob filters, added a light for extra plant growth.

This was the idea I needed when I used a hob on my co2 tank before I got the canister. Gonna try this when I attempt the hob planted one day

That is what I love about HOB filters, you can DIY them and beef them up strait out of the box, something you cannot do with other filter types.

Here it is in action, you will notice it creates a small whirl pool in the middle which keeps the surface of my water clean:

So I worked on a second version of my slipway to stop the flow from my HOB's current being to strong and it works a lot better than my current one and less unsightly. Used a plastic tomato sauce bottle cut in half:

I did something similar on a little marine tank with a light right above the white piece, soon turned into a very nifty algae scrubber.

@Vis: I might try that but don't know how it might impact my plant growth.

Well in marine aquariums algae scrubbers are used to export nutrient but you plants are already doing that for you.
