Has anybody successfully used Open Top Barrels with Lid & Clamp as a canister filter?

I read that they seal air tight and are graded for food storage, so leaking toxins should not be an issue.

The 30 or even 50 Lt size would make a great filter.

seen them used in koi setups ...

Maybe the question is how do you want to use them? I can easily see a pump with a decent head at the bottom and layers and layers of filter media stacked around the return pipe ...

@Toy , thats a great idea, you could make it gravity fed with a larger diameter hose on the input and let the water siphon in and use a decent size pump at the bottom to pump water back to the tank.

can definitely do it. i made one out of pvc pipe and a small pump. and because its gravity fed you dont need a powerful pump. works really we.

Could you post pics at some stage, if possible. I'm really keen to try this.

I did this in 2015 I think and made 2 different types. The problem is the pressure build up in the drum.

Did you place the powerhead before the drum (push) or after the drum (pull)?

The pressure from 1.6 m gravity feed to the drum should not create that much pressure if you use a pull system?

Maybe use a 1:1 ratio on the intake and outlet of drum to create a vacuum and limit pressure buildup?
