You know it but can keep your ph stable at the right parameters, can you keep you water perfect, can you ensure they will
Not get ill? Knowing and doing is totally different things.

Shakester, if I'm honest, I'd say leave the discus for a much longer time until you are more experienced with other fishees, and have kept them healthy and alive for a Long LONG time!!

Maybe try Blue Rams first, and see how you do with them? Get as much experience of succesfully keeping fish alive as you can before venturing into Discus, otherwise, you are likely to loose a lot of very valuable fish very quickly!!

    Just my thoughts!
    Regards
    G!

I think the point that Vis was trying to make was can you keep the tank stable once the fish are in there??

All the poop and regular feeding will affect the water chemistry as well as trying to match the correct chemistry with the water changes. Thats before even getting to the pH stability!!

I hope you manage to keep them, and I'm not trying to put a downer on things, but just want whats best for beautiful and expensive fish that are very hard to keep successfully!!

    Good Luck!
    G!

I fear shakes has gone against all the brilliant advice given to him (again) on this thread and other threads. I believe he has bought his discus already.

It would look that way indeed Zoom, but some people have to learn the hard way i guess??

So much for letting the tank water mature for a year before adding discus? Or keeping them in a group of at least 6??

I hope for the sake of the fish you manage to keep this fish alive and well Shakester, and even manage to get him to prosper!! I fear this will not be the case?

almost, and then I found these threads and have declined the order...

just had a 15 min chat with him and I think I might have talked him out of trying discus for now and told him to take the discus he bought today back to the LFS who cheerfully told him that it will be fine in a community setup... he's going to chat with some very experienced and knowledgeable discus keepers in his area and then decide...

Do a google search for Microgeophagus Ramirezi, but before you go out and buy them, DO LOTS OF READING about them, and ASK here for info!

People are more than willing to help if you will listen to them.

    Cheers

And you think that Discus are cheaper?? You should be able to get a pair for less than R100? Not the Neon Blue Rams though! They are a different kettle of fish!!

What you want to try is either a pair of Bolivian Rams or German Blue Rams!! If you can keep German Blues alive for a long time, then maybe after a year, consider discus, and only after doing your research properly!! The Prof will help as much as he can, but think about your questions, and search the forum for threads about discus. Use this time to get to know about fish keeping in general as well as Discus!

As for 'doing what you have to do'... You will learn very quickly who you can listen to advice from, and who to ignore!! I know it sounds hard, but thats just the way it is! Some people do offer crap information, and I've been one of those people in the past, and from time to time have been corrected recently too! We are all learning always, but we are also trying to help people. Most people have the best part of their information correct, but have a little confusion in some of the fine points which can make all the difference!

The best thing you can do, is to read all the advice, and weigh up the overall information. Then compare that to the likes of someone with the greatest respect (in my case the Prof), and see if the info is still good?

    Hope that helps?
    Regards
    G!

I agree with Big G. Before putting in the discus try rams. I'm not to sure what you going to be keeping with the discus, but I had a school of neons, keyhole cichlids, a couple of different pleco's and cory's with lots of plants. Allow the system to mature and stabilize before adding discus. It's a bit of a wait but well worth it.

The difference is Shakester, that you need only buy one or two pair of rams, as apposed to 6 - 10 Discus. Thats quite a price difference!!

    Cheers
