I have wanted to keep these fish for a long time and just didnt have enough and dont have the experience, this is why I am doing the research .
I have learnt the hard way.I regret buying the little guy in the first place and that is why I am doing the research so no more discus will die in my hands.
You have to start some where and what i am doing now is the first step in the research i am embarking on In order to keep discus.
I wont be keeping discus for a long time and wont until i know how to keep them alive.I think it is cruel for people to buy these beautiful fish and not have done any research on how to keep them and then they die within a week because they dont know how to keep them healthy and what the specific living conditions are .I am taking one step at a time and learning alot.I do agree that people do make them sound hard to keep and this is true for only when you havnt done any research , dont have enough experience and arnt ready to comit.I am ready to comit to the effort that it takes to keep Discus.
Thanks for all the help i appreciate it very much

Hey MC1, Just my tupence worth....

When you are ready, and have done all the necessary research, the most important rule in success with these fish (in my Humble opinion) is to buy them from a reputable source!! Having fish from a good source is always a good starting point, so the fish are not already in a deteriorated state before you've even started!!

Breeders like the Prof are your best starting point!! This can limit the types available to you, but there are many experienced Discus breeders, many of which frequent this site!!

I suggest that when you are ready, you post on this forum first, rather than going to LFS's and getting inferior death sentenced fishees!! The extra quality fish may cost you a little more in the short term, but it'll be worth it in the long term, and in fact most home breeders actually charge less than the LFS in anycase!!

Good luck, and do your research!! Google is our friend!!

    Regards
    G!

Mc1, what I would suggest, and some might very well disagree is the following. Get the tank that you intend to keep Discus in. Run it 4 atleast 2 months with maybe a couple of Zebra Danio's to get the filter going. Its important during this time that you get the water to what it should be for discus, ph +- 6.8, hardness levels etc. You can do this using RO water or lots of peat moss in the filter (peat is slow acting, especially in buffered tap water). After 2 months get yourself a couple of Blue Rams. They have the similar water expectations to Discus, excet a bit cooler in temp, but are much cheaper. If you can keep them alive and HEALTHY 4 6mths, i would think you could probably keep Discus happy.

    Shakester,

Just one request please. All of the answers to you on this forum have been in fully written out English. Could you please also answer like this and not write SMS language? I may be a little old-fashioned, but it makes a total mess of threads.

    Many thanks and kind regards,

    Dirk

    No Shakester,

    You should write:

"OK, I'll try" The apostrophe is because it abbreviates "I will". Die Engelse taal is maar 'n gesukkel.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Hi Shakester,

Yes, discus do twitch or shake when they want to spawn. A pair will start shaking when they are next to each other or when facing a spawning cone, before they start laying their eggs. Why do you ask?

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

How long has "he" been on his own, and what type of a discus is he? How big is he and what is the size of the tank that he is in at the moment. Is he in a planted tank, or bare bottom? What sort of filtration do you have and what is the filtration rate?
