Discus wanted in JHB

Hi all. A mate of mine has a new 5 foot tank and is looking for top class discus in Gauteng. Can anyone recommend a decent store or breeder? Cheers.

Unfortunately I cant help atm. I will hopefully start breeding again next year when my fish reach maturity. Along with that will also probably do a wild caught discus import around Mrch/April

Other than that I can not be of assistance at present

@Marco is obviously your best choice but as he cant help for now, I thought I will mention that Wazeers in Boksburg has brought in some discus twice now in the last two months

I am not an expert but.. from what I saw, these didn't look bad quality at all
They were medium and some rather large, looked fat and healthy... did not have a sad skinny look with tummies tucked in.
Colours were excellent with no peppering
So maybe have a look and see

 

Hi @green guppy, your friend seems serious about getting good fish so my recommendation is to wait till we have some luck, or for the next import. The water restrictions put the brakes on but they are being relaxed so breeding will commence shortly. You will not find good quality fish at any petshop. They are mostly of Asian decent so bring with them a host of problems unknown to the casual keepers. Compatibility with other fish later on is also a problem as you can't mix these fish with our bred/imported stock. So any serious discus keeper will stay far away from any of these LFS fish, the prices are also ridiculous.

But with stock aside, you're friend will also have to look into the infrastructure needed to care for these fish. Changing water out the tap is a no go with discus these days and many have lost fish doing this. You need a water prepping facility where you can treat and prep the water as needed. If you do not, you will have problems eventually.

Feed is also concern as most over the counter foods are no good. They are too dry and devoid of oils and fat and as a result bloat your fish.

So before rushing out and buying whatever is available rather be patient and get everything into place to care for them properly. People love to say that they are easy to keep but let me tell you right now that they are not, they aren't rocket science either but there's a difference in keeping them alive and keeping them successfully.

Oh yes, don't be fooled when they tell you the fish are Stendkers, there's a reason we call them stinkers these days.
