Witnessed the joy of my discus laying eggs and going through the motions of spawning. Is it happened I was at Prof Bellstedt's picking up food when they started laying eggs. While I was at the Profs we had had a long discussion on fertility and breeding. I have no intention of breeding as I am away to much and would have to set up a second system and I am very happy with my planted community tank, so I had mixed feeling about the spawn. I was pretty sure that they would not make it past fry. As it happened it looks like the eggs were not fertilized as on day 2 they were still clear. By day three they had disappeared and I couldn't help feeling sorry for the couple.

Pictures show the parents at work. Anyone care to comment on who is who in the zoo? Male and female?

    Clear pictures are needed.

But just a calculated guess from the dorsal fins of Cobalt, that he can be the HE :)

I think that the pink tube in the first pic of the Brown is the egg layer. Pity the video I took is HD, and too big to upload, as you see the brown make a line but it was behind the log so I couldn't see if there were eggs or not.

I am wondering if the male sterility is permanent.

So the couple is at it again. I am starting to feel sorry for them. We will see if he manages to fertilize any this time. I really have no intention of breeding especially not with these two or in a community tank . I wonder if there is something to discourage them. When this happens they take over half the tank and the whole group gets a bit more aggressive to each other.

Agreed cobalt he and marboro she....90% sure also cause of size.

But well done for getting them to spawn, you might not wanna breed them, but if those fry hatch and ou c them feeding of mommy and daddy you will be hooked.

    Hi

You can use a tool called "Irfan View" to resize your HD pics. Works great. Just Google it and download the latest version of it. The tool is freeware. I use it myself. Turn a 5MB file into 56kb! more or less. HTH.

Well congrats Biggles, even though the fry didn't make it at least you know have a fertile pair. Who do you think was responsible for the fry disappearing in the community?
