    Hi

I need some help with Discus. I have been asking around at a few different places for help with Discus and i have been getting different answers every time. So here are the few questions i have:

    1. How many Discus can i have in one tank? (discus per liter)

    2. Can you have different species of discus in one tank?

    3. Can you have different sizes of discus together?

    4. What other types of fish can you keep with discus?

    5. Should there be plants in the tank?

    6. I have heard that Discus do not like a lot of light. Is this true?

I would really appreciate the help if you could answer any or all of the questions here.

    Here are my tank specs.

    Tank 1: 100x50x73 365l
    Tank 2: 130x80x73 759l

    Total volume: 1114l

Both tanks have the same water conditions as they use the same water and filters.

    Tank 1: 2x Altum Angels
    2x Talking Cats
    1x Ghost Knife
    2x Bristle Noses

    Tank 2: 6x Discus
    16x Cardinal Tetras
    12x Scissor tails
    5x Bristle Noses
    2x Rainbow Sharks
    8x Mixed Corys
    2x Clown Loaches

If any of these fish dont match please let me know too please. I want to remove almost all of the fish in Tank 1 and do something there so any thoughts would be awesome. There are no plants in that tank atm.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    @Frank007301

I am relatively new to Discus myself.
But here is my take on things.

    1) General feeling is about 40L per fish. Some sources say more, up to 70L and I know of experienced keepers to have them in roughly 20L per fish.
But I think with 40L you should be ok.

    2) Different species do you mean different colour forms?
Yes you can. But if you get them from different sources you have to qt first and introduce the new fish very carefully. You don't want to introduce the plague or other diseases to you tank

3). I suppose you could. I have known of Discus keepers to do it. But you need to make sure that the smaller ones are getitng a decent amount of food.
So it is probably easier if they are all the same size

    4) Anything that can handle the higher temps, prefers the softer water, and isn't too boisterous.
So things like Tetras, dwarf cichlids (Rams, Apostos), some of the Corries, some of the smaller Plecs.
I see in your tank you have sharks and clown loaches. I think they will be too active and aggressive for Discus and I wouldn't keep them together.

    5) I have seen some fantastic planted tanks. I think it is quite difficult to maintain though. The CO2/O2 levels and the higher temps may be difficult to maintain.
Also, with the regular vacuuming needed, it may be difficult to maintain the hygene levelsa needed if it is heavily planted.
My tank is just fine gravel and some wood. Once the Discus are bigger, I may add a few hardy plants.

    6) Not true. Decent lights will show off their colours nicely. If you have an area where the fish can go to where the lights are more subdued, they will be fine.

As I say, I am new to keeping Discus. But have done a lot of research. And think I have an understanding of the basics.

Something to bear in mind is that there is a lot of confusing info out there.
There are many opinionons on how to keep them.
In fact, I won't go on Discus Forums any more. It was just too confusing. I have a friend/mentor who has been keeping Discus for many many years. And I listen to his advice.

The big big big (and I cannot stress this enough) point is buy decent fish to start off with.
If you buy poor quality or sick fish, you will struggle from the start.

    Hope this all helps.

@Reedfish is 100% correct on every thing he has said. I would have know problem adding more then the recommended fish per liter of water provided, they are young, and you are prepared to clean up and do regular water changes. I have found adding a large number of discus together when they are small removes a lot of aggression and makes them rather comfortable.

I have also found out threw my experience that if discus are kept in to small of a group, bright lights and movements in the room will startle them. Add a few more and you are A ok. Rather talk to guys that have been keeping discus then read all the stuff on the internet. @Marko @erros111 and @Altum come to mind. There are lots more on the forum.
