I'm looking to buy six to eight medium/large Discus from private keepers/breeders (preferably in the Pretoria/Johannesburg area). I really like the Snakeskins, but will consider other strains that "wink" at me...

Ideally I'd like to get one or two fish from three or four different breeders.

Thanks vee - I do appreciate you looking!

I've seen a few ads/post on various fishkeeping forums, e-mailed the breeders but a few days later they've still not responded... Maybe they're just not online everyday...

    I'll keep watching the classifieds

Thanks Rowland... I've sent him an e-mail but it probably got lost in the spam folder (happens so often).

I've contacted him via a forum - let's hold thumbs...

Nope... No luck. Would think private breeders/keepers/importers would be keen to sell but they aren't.

As Rowland said above, try finding the guy from Potch who imports, perhaps he can help you. I must add that I've tried contacting him through various forums (forum posts as well as PM's) and I've e-mailed him directly but have had no response so far. If you get hold of him please ask him to contact me.

The best bet might be a good LFS.

That's a good price Zafgak. I would however prefer to not let them travel so far. You know anybody here in Gauteng that has?

Yeah, Derek is the guy who runs Fish Fantasy World. I was there last weekend...very impressive. Unfortunately, he is not breeding discus at the moment.

My uncle is trying to breed his, but no luck so far.

    Hi Guys,

For those of you in Johannesburg, I would like to point out to you that it is absolutely no problem to send discus from Cape Town to you. They have to be delivered to the airport here 2 hours before departure, they fly for 2 hours and then you can collect them 30 minutes after arrival. I have sent discus all over the country over a period of some 15 years now, and I have had absolutely no problems with persons that receive them. As our water here in CT is much better for discus than in Johannesburg, the chances are good that the fishes will be in a much better condition than if you bought them in Johannesburg.

At the moment I know of no breeders in Johannesburg, so this means that all discus that are available there have been transported from Singapore or Malaysia and as a result have been exposed to much more stress than if they were to have been transported from Cape Town.

The latest discus that I have bred are Alencer Reds which are available at a size of 6-7 cm at the moment (see separate thread on these).

ACE007, why bother with Joburg if you can get fishes locally? Why don't you come and see my fish sometime? I do not exactly how many discus I have at the moment, but it must be over 100.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
