    Hi Folk,

Please can you point me to tropical fish stores in Cape Town - I have just moved here from Joburg.

I am looking for a store that takes the hobby seriously and stocks a decent range of tropicals including the unusual.

Please do not suggest Pet World - I have been there and I'm not impressed at all.

I have been to SAMS in Bergvliet.

Also ,besides Sams and Petworld (N1 City and also Cape Gate, latter is perhaps a bit cleaner and better run although focuses more on Marine):
    - Aquatic Warehouse (Plumstead)
    - Perky Pets (Plumstead)
    - Panorama Pets (Parow)

They vary in stock and general appeal over time, and I visit all of them from time to time. Probably not on par with the best in JHB though.

Hi @brentmin and welcome to Cape Town!

I agree with @Cale24 that our lfs are probably not on par with the best of Jhb, can be very hit and miss. The folks have already listed a few stores, some of which I haven’t visited before.

In addition there is Shrimp Stop for nano fish, invertebrates, plants, and some products. Think it is an online only store.

I’ve also couriered in some special plants and livestock I couldn’t find locally.

When you say you’re looking for tropicals, do you mean freshwater fish or plants or both? Would’ve been great to have had a one-stop store here, but it seems as if one needs to shop around and perhaps ask forum members where you can find specific things. Some members breed etc. some stores are happy to order things for you.

Would be easier for forum members to point you in the right direction if you ask about specific things.

Hi Folk, yes I am looking for freshwater tropicals and decent plants. I was at Pet World N1, Somerset West and Gateway. Not impressed with Pet World. They are not serious about the hobby - most of what they do focuses on dogs and cats. I will try the suggestions you folk have given me.

Yeah, seen those ADA things popping up at a few LFS. Went to RBM Aquatics in Durbanville recently and was pleased with what I found. Traditionally marine specialists but now catering to fresh water with a focus on aquascaping. Guy I chatted with seemed excited by that area of the hobby, increasingly popular, which is nice to see as a consumer. Prices are good too.

Just note that they’r technically closed on Sundays but are there between 9and10am to feed the fish and would help you if you need something during that time.

The horned nerites (small) were R30 - very good price. Zebra nerites were mixed sizes, sorry didn’t ask the price as I was pressed for time.
Plants were very well priced too and a good selection (best I’ve seen in CT probably), labeled and legit. Nice selection of spiderwood, and some rock.
Extensive product lines including Seachem, Scape.
Limited freshwater fish selection at this stage but some cool things like gobies.

Hi guys Popped into RBM on Friday. Very good quality. Very helpful lady. Plants were excellent. Plant pricing was good but have seen the same pricing upcountry (but not a rip off). Fish selection very limited for freshwater, but nice tanks and some empty (probably awaiting stock). Pricing for seachem and a couple of products I have seen at other CT LFS were the best at this place

Oh boy you should go back
    • Sleeper gobies
    • Various polypterus
    • River gobies
    • Farlowella catfish
    • Electric blue acara
    • Apistos
So on... Also got some nerites. Two appear to be dead (Haven't moved in 24 hours and smell pretty bad) and they offered to replace them. Great shop.

Capetownians: how about we arrange to meet up at an aquarium store for say an hour one Saturday? Meet & greet, have a look around, people with specific knowledge/ interests can point out interesting things, give pointers? Stock up on fish food while we’re at it.

I know the joburgers and some other folks have had braais / other gettogethers or exhibitions. A ‘bump into each other at a fish store’ sounds like very little organisation & commitment but would be nice & interesting don’t you think?

    Any takers?
