Watch certain Nandos adverts and the news of certain political figure heads they seem to have lots of tricks on how to do it effectively.

i dont have full grasp of the actual seriousness of this topic, but Prof, might i ask an actual question about dead koi. having lost two big ones and 12 smaller already, what exactly should be the effect of blue death ant poison on a living thing like koi? my dads koi pond got an accidental dose of the powder covering the pond surface. wind blew it over and the pond got dosed. . . what would you recommend doing to stop further deaths? he has rinsed and backwashed the filters a dosen or more times now. washed the residue off the plants/ drained the pond twice and had it scrubbed down... any advice?

    Hi Ferryman,

This does not sound good. Can you check on the ingredients of the ant poison and post them please.

I do not quite understand what you are saying to me with regard to the remaining Koi. Are they still in the system and how many are there?

What I can advise, without knowing what is in the ant poison though is that you should add a large amount of activated charcoal into the filter. This will bind the toxins. I do not know what the volume is of the pond, the pump rate and if you still have space in the filter sump, but if you could get a 5 litre bucket full of activated charcoal into the filter that would help for starters. This should then be removed after two days and replaced with another 5 litres.

If you give some more of the above requested details I may be able to give more advice.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Adcock Ingram (L-number 7031) - Blue Death Insect Killer Powder - active ingredient - carbaryl/permethrin

thats the powder gone into the pond
There's still about 10 adolescents (15-20cm), 1 adult (30+cm) and another about 50 cm in the pond. the filtering system is basically my dad's diy idea using two pool filter drums, first using silica sand filtration, then on to ceramic slides and nylon bundles for biological filtration. i can manage 5lt of charcoal in there though both drums have been repeatedly backwash-waste-rinsed since the spillage the previous weekend.

Last fish to die was about 40cm, mt sister said it look like it was doing somersaults in the water just before it just stopped moving and floated atop, dead.

Remaining fish mentioned above are still in the system, having nowhere else to put them, yet by now the water is 100% replaced, and the filters flushed, the pond was even drained and scrubbed down, the plants as well, havent had a death in 2 days now, thats why i'm asking if you reacon the damage is done and gone, or if its probable that all the remaining fish are going to keel over yet.

    Hi again Ferryman,

Carbaryl is extremely toxic and also has a tendency to be deposited in tissues if I remember correctly. If 100% water changes have been done and you have not had a death in 2 days that sounds positive but if you can do the activated charcoal you would be sure to remove whatever may remain of the poison and I still think it will be good because of the low levels at which these substances are toxic. It is also because of the residual action that the large fish has now died, but I hope that this should be the end of the fatalities/mortalities.... I would still strongly advise the activated charcoal to help remove traces of the poison.

Keep us updated on, hopefully, progress and no further fatalities.

What I would recommend in general to all persons that suspect toxicity in any fishes is to add activated charcoal. It is in itself completely harmless but does bind all toxins very effectively.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
