So everyone today I thought I would give everyone a tour of my sump and basically what's under the hood of my discus tank. Thought it would be nice to show everyone what I have done to maybe inspire others and hopefully improve on this setup. I designed this specifically as I knew I sometimes go away for 2 weeks at a time and it needed to handle whatever could be thrown at it and also be light work if anyone needs to do a water change for me while I'm away as lugging buckets of water isn't cool man.

So I'll start at the beginning...

Basically water flows from my corner Weir into the first chamber of my sump going through a filter sock and then down through some open cell foam ( the foam is to stop any ceramics from possibly shifting into the first chamber).IMG_20171229_194024.jpg

From here it moves to the second chamber. In this chamber we have two bags of ceramics in netted bags (+-2 litre) so it is easy to remove and clean if needed. We also have about 7 litres of fluidised media which I have found to work really well so far. I use a wave maker stuck to the base of the sump to fluidise the media.IMG_20171229_194053.jpg

The water then moves through a screen to chamber 3. In this chamber sits the return pump and heater.

The return from the sump splits into two feeds using a garden adapter I found at a local hardware store and has come in very handy as it clips on and off with ease!
    IMG_20171229_194108.jpg

One line runs to the algae scrubber sitting above the biological media, while the other goes back to the display.

The water going over to the algae scrubber runs over a plastic mesh rigged up to make a place for algae to grow. The lights are red and blue LEDs I made for cheap and are on a split photo period at night.
    IMG_20171229_194226.jpg

The return then goes to a spraybar at the bottom of my discus setup to pickup debris and send it down the overflow.

You may be wondering what the pipe in the right hand corner does??

This pipe drops through the tank and goes through a ball valve to a hose connector. I am able to connect a hosepipe out the front door and open the valve and the tank will drain until it drops below the open of this upright pipe mesh.( Obviously the filtration is switched off when this happens). This makes water changes a lot easier too.IMG_20171229_194348.jpg

Next to my sump under the stand is my water reservoir tank. This tank can hold up to 110 litres and is where I prepare and heat he water for my water changes. I have a circulation pump and heater connected together and a second pump which pumps water into the tank to fill after I have drained the display. This has a float valve to turn the RO filter off when it is full enough. I have made it so that when I drain the tank as far as it will go with the standpipe inside, I have just enough water in my reservoir tank to refill he tank, maximizing my water changes and minimizing the amount of water I need to heat.IMG_20171229_194249.jpg
Below is a picture of the weir and the outflow from my reservoir tank
    IMG_20171229_194317.jpg

Finally a photo of all the switches that control the tank and my two temperature controllers that ensure my reservoir tank and display tank are at the correct temperature.
    IMG_20171229_194011.jpg

I hope this was interesting and informative and would love to hear what you all think of it. Any criticism is welcome!

I like your method/valve to remove water from the tank.

How often do you trim the algae in the scrubber?

it was a must for me when setting up the aquarium, knowing that i was going to be changing out a lot off water.

i usually wipe off what algae has grown every 2 weeks or so. i once left it for about 4 weeks and when i checked it had about a cm thick layer of brown algae slime...yuck

but i guess its good coz that would have been dissolved nasties in the setup

So my low tech that burst has now been cut up and glue together into a new sump!!

I have decided I no longer want to have my money in my life and I'm starting a marine tank:rolleyes:

This sump will be used on the marine tank so I have already started with the project.

Bought some electric blue rams today Nd added them to my discus setup. 6 rams to be exact. Already the tank is a totally new setup with a whole new vibe. The discus seem to be a bit more friendly:)

    Quick snap of the rams!

Will upload a short video of my discus feeding and will leave a link here for those interested:tt2:

Feeding looks nice an calm, do you find that they have an eat order or is it like most other fish, see food and eat.

There are definitely two who sit back a bit and eat the bits that fall down however this may be more due to fussiness than a pecking order

So everyone...Ive been building a new marine setup and as I am a person who likes to succeed first time round I'm trying my best not to skimp on anything. Currently I've been working on the stand and have now basically completed it. The sump is complete and was graciously given a DT by a friend. Here are some pictures of the progress so farIMG_20180115_164458(1).jpg IMG_20180115_164513(1).jpg IMG_20180115_170924.jpg IMG_20180103_152223.jpg IMG_20180103_152245.jpg

    so a quick update...
my high tech is no longer!!!
A week back after redoing my scape i discovered a pinhole leak in the tank corner and thus had to tear the setup down:(

for now all i have is my discus tank and a lil holding tank with some shrimp.

the marine setup is still going along slowly, however im back at varsity now so everything is going to be moving a lot slower now.

might be a few new additions to the discus setup sometime this year but we will see!!

I tore the tank down straight away and in that 2 hours there was already a significant amount of water everywhere

So it's been a while since an update happened:(

Been very busy at varsity, however, a few things have changed.

My high tech is basically sold off and I've been slowly putting together my marine setup. I keep thinking im nearly done then I will find a new gadget I "need" to add to the setup lol.

So currently all I have running at the moment is my discus setup:thumbup: I've sterilised and cleaned all my old equipment and buckets so I'm now parafree and will only be doing parafree freshwater fish from now onwards.

    Some pics for those interested.
