Hi all, i just had the time of my life, was lucky enough to get a flight on the Dakota plain. Its about 60 years old.

Its got a long history behind its name, and if you ever get the chance, go for it, its worth it.

That doesn't look like a Dakota.
The Dakota is the common name for the Douglas DC3, which was used extensively in WWII to drop paratroopers, particularly during the D-Day offensive.
It was also used extensively by the SAAF, where it got the fond nickname of "Vomit Comet" "KotsKoets" and other names.

Unable to see the tail of the aircraft in your pic, the fuselage looks similar to the Lockheed Electra, which was introduced around 1940.

A rare and fantastic opportunity none the less, with more people travelling in the DC3 than the one you were privileged to fly in.

Man I envy you, was the flight smooth or rickety?

It was amazing. Few bumps taking off and landing. They said that they replaced the nose with a longer one, and this plain was built in 1950s... the tail had 2 right up, almost roundish fins... and whats amazing, theres no efi or computers onboard, all mechanical, old school and analog. Sounded like a harley on steroids when it idled.

They also showed us a similar engine, and explained that it was a 30 liter motor.

We flew at 120 knots which is about 220 kmh.

Think im getting addicted with old plains too now.

    Also recorded the whole flight.

Once chartered 3 for a company conference to Vic falls, I think the "newest" model was built in 1943. It was a loooong flight in February with lost of turbulence, it wasn't the most comfortable flight I seem to recall. Not being pressurized, I think we flew at 8000 feet, do the views were great.

Attended an airshow in England years back and they flew some old prop planes, then they fired up a few genuine spitfires. You could clearly see why these planes where we'll above anything else in the sky in their time.

You can't help but get goose bumps when those planes started up.
